CORVALLIS - The relationship between patriotism and protest - especially in the aftermath of terrorist attacks and the war with Iraq - is the focus of an Oregon State University lecture series called "Democracy and Dissent."
The series begins on Thursday, Sept. 25, with a lecture by David Loy of Bunkyo University in Japan called "The New Holy War."
Sponsored by the OSU Department of Philosophy, the series will examine issues of freedom of speech, public dissent, democracy, popular culture and patriotism. Speakers include faculty members from OSU and several other institutions nationally, and John Nichols, author of "The Milagro Beanfield War."
All lectures are free and open to the public. They include:

- Oct. 23: "Latino Politics and Transnational Organizing in the Age of War," by Anna Sampaio, University of Colorado-Denver. 4 p.m., Withycombe 217.
