CORVALLIS - The 2003 Starker Lectures at Oregon State University will feature four ecologists and natural resource experts speaking in October and November on the topic "Complexity in Natural Resource Science, Policy and Management."

The lectures are free and open to the public, sponsored by the OSU College of Forestry. The series will explore the complex relationships between ecological, social and economic aspects of natural resources, organizers say. The lectures may also be viewed as live broadcasts via streaming video, with details available on the web at http://www.cof.orst.edu/starkerlectures/2003series.php.

The speakers and their topics include:

  • Oct. 9: C.S. Holling, professor emeritus at the University of Florida, speaking in Austin Auditorium of the LaSells Stewart Center at 3:30 p.m. on the topic "From Complex Regions to Complex Worlds."

     

  • Oct. 23: Tom Atzet, a forest ecologist with the USDA Forest Service, will speak in Construction and Engineering Auditorium of the LaSells Stewart Center at 4 p.m. on the topic "Complexity in Fire Ecology: The Case of the Biscuit Fire."

     

  • Nov. 6: Jim Bowyer, professor emeritus of forest products at the University of Minnesota and chairman of the Tropical Forest Foundation, will speak in Richardson Hall Room 107 at 4 p.m. on the topic "Consumption and the Sustainability Equation."

     

  • Nov. 20: Karl Stauber, president of the Northwest Area Foundation, will speak in Richardson Hall Room 107 at 4 p.m. on the topic "Complexity and the Common Good. So, why are we confused?"

The Starker Lectures are supported by the Starker family in memory of T.J. and Bruce Starker, prominent members in the history of the Oregon forest products industry.
