PORTLAND -The Oregon State University Extension Service is co-sponsoring a two-day conference Sept. 17-18 in Portland that will examine the increasingly serious issue of mold in buildings.

Also co-sponsoring the event are the American Lung Association of Oregon, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Portland General Electric Earth Advantage. The conference, "Mold in Buildings: Prevention, Assessment and Resolution," will be held at the airport Holiday Inn.

Mold growth in buildings is becoming an increasingly common problem and has serious implications for human health, explained Pat Aune, an educator with the OSU Extension Service.

Professionals and citizens concerned about indoor air quality will find the conference relevant, Aune said, including builders, remodelers, architects, building and home inspectors, school personnel, health educators, industrial hygienists, housing authorities, HVAC practitioners, environmental consultants, homeowners and real estate, legal and insurance professionals.

The conference will address the identification, prevention and correction of mold growth in buildings. Commonly referenced remediation guidelines, techniques and solutions will be presented and related health issues will be discussed.

Presentations will include: "The Mold Epidemic: Fact vs. Fiction," "Mold Remediation Guidelines, Regulations and Laws," "Beyond Mold: Other Biological Concerns," "Mold and Human Health," and "Controlling Moisture in Residential Construction."
