CORVALLIS - An Oregon Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopter from Salem's 1,042nd Medical Company will land on the Oregon State University campus on Tuesday, March 5.

The event is part of a new Special Topics in Air Force Studies class (AS299) offered by OSU's Air Force ROTC.

The medical-evacuation helicopter will arrive about 1 p.m. in the grassy area north of Jefferson Way, between 14th and 11th streets, said Maj. James Wenschlag, OSU assistant professor of Air Force Studies and class AS299 instructor. The event is open to t he public and the helicopter will remain on campus until 4 p.m.

"The AS299 class, which is open to all OSU students, combines guest speakers, museum tours, and special events such as the Blackhawk display to introduce students to air power," he said.

Tuesday's landing will provide OSU students an opportunity to view some of the nation's most technical flight equipment and talk to the pilots that fly the helicopters, Wenschlag said. Information about OSU's ROTC programs will also be available.

The Blackhawk is a single-rotor helicopter with space for two pilots in the front and dual sliding doors on either side of the aircraft for quick entrance during rescue and evacuation missions.
