CORVALLIS - A number of classes still have openings for the winter-spring sessions of the Mid-Willamette Valley Saturday Academy, a program hosted by Oregon State University that offers extracurricular learning opportunities in science, mathematics and technology for students in grades 5-12.

Most of the small, hands-on classes are held on Saturdays, but times and dates vary with each program. For more information on registration, fees, course descriptions, and other details, call 541-737-8139 or go to the organization's Web site.

Some of the classes still available for high school students focus on such topics as the use of mathematics to construct secret codes, research projects in chemical and biomedical engineering, new approaches to the battle against AIDS and cancer, the life of a veterinary doctor, an overview of the imaging technologies used in medicine, money management, design with watercolors, marine acoustics, digital photography, research experiences in pharmacy, and chimpanzees and human evolution.

Among the classes still available for middle school students are engineering design, realistic drawing, real-world math problems, paper sculpture, origami and mathematics, creating web pages, producing banners, computer basics, clay sculpture, women in engineering, digital photography, summer computer workshops, aeromodeling, and an exploration of the Quartzville mining district.
