CORVALLIS - Students from high schools across Oregon recently earned medals at the 19th annual Oregon Invitational Mathematics Tournament at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

More than 230 high school students participated in the event, hosted by the OSU Department of Mathematics and the OSU Department of Science and Mathematics Education. The students qualified for the state competition through outstanding performances in earlier regional competitions or by achieving a qualifying test score. Students competed in five categories: algebra one, geometry, algebra two, advanced one (precalculus), and advanced two (calculus). Additional options for participation were provided for team and individual problem solving, puzzles, games, estimation, and poster competitions.

Students with a score among the top 10 in each category received a medal from the Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Other prizes included five $1,000 scholarships to the OSU College of Engineering, a $500 scholarship from CH2M Hill, a $100 scholarship from the Houghton-Mifflin Publishing Company, $20 gift certificates to the OSU Bookstore, graphing calculators from Hewlett-Packard and Texas Instruments, and books from Borders.
