CORVALLIS - Ten Oregon State University students have been honored by the College of Liberal Arts by being named 2003 winners of CLA Outstanding Senior Awards.

The awards are based on demonstrated academic excellence, campus involvement, and community service.

This year's winners and their backgrounds include:

  • AMITY: Jenny Rowe, a theater arts major, was cited for her devotion to student health education as a peer student coordinator, for her numerous theatrical performances, and for her internship with The Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
  • CORVALLIS: Angus McBrian, a political science major, was cited for his work as a founding member of Wrench, an organization dedicated to freedom, democracy, and ending oppression and social violence.
  • LOWELL: Cort Brazelton, a history major, was cited for completing his honors thesis on the 13th century collapse of Mediterranean civilizations, hosting a Discovery Travel Channel program in Rome, and playing in local musical benefits.
  • PORTLAND: Christina Newman, a psychology major, was cited for her honors thesis on insight into decision making, leadership of the Psychology Club, founding the OSU Psi Chi psychology honor society chapter, and her work as an OSU Student Foundation member and student body senator.
  • REDMOND: Kimberly Ivancovich, an art major, was cited for her honors thesis exploring the lives of teen parents, for presenting a paper at the Portland Art Museum Undergraduate Art History Symposium, and for her work as a photo editor for campus publications.
  • ROSEBURG: Emily Rader, a French major and German and English minor, was cited for her work as student representative to the Oregon University System Executive Board for France, as an international ambassador for OSU's Office of International Programs, for her weekly column in the OSU Barometer, and for her work as jazz and blues music director for KBVR.
  • SALEM: Jacob Stefanik, a political science major, was cited for his contributions as ASOSU student body vice president, his volunteer work in Mexico and with local elementary schools, and for his internship with a U.S. Senator.
  • SHERIDAN: Katherine Cunnion, an English major, was cited for her volunteer work with the Japanese Students Association and the OSU Center for Writing and Learning.
  • SOUTH DAKOTA: SPEARFISH: Megan Sand, a music major, was cited for her work as a board member of Opera Theater Corvallis and for winning the College Women II division national Association of Teachers of Singing auditions in 2002 and 2003.
  • WASHINGTON: VANCOUVER: Rachel Lewis-Porter, a sociology major, was cited for presenting a paper at the Pacific Sociological Association annual meeting and for her work to prevent violence against women.
