CORVALLIS - Oregon State University music faculty members Richard Poppino, baritone, Rachelle McCabe, piano, will perform the song cycle, "Die schone Mullerin" ("The Beautiful Maid of the Mill") by Franz Schubert.
The recital will be held on Saturday, April 26, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 4515 West Hills Blvd. in Corvallis. Admission is free.
The cycle of 20 songs is one of the masterpieces of 19th-century German song. It tells the story of a young man undone by his own sensitive, romantic nature. A journeyman miller, he takes up work at a new mill and soon falls deeply in love with the master's daughter. She trifles with him briefly, but is lured away by a dashing hunter. Lacking the emotional strength to tolerate her rejection, the young miller gives over to his sorrow. But he finds comfort in the brook, which has been his friend and confidant throughout the story.
Poppino teaches voice and is the director of vocal studies at OSU. He earned his master's degree in vocal performance from Southern Methodist University and his bachelor's degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has appeared as a soloist with numerous operas and symphonies, and has taught on the voice faculties of Lewis and Clark College, Southern Methodist University, and Portland State University, as well as the Bel Canto Northwest summer program.
McCabe is professor of music at OSU and director of piano studies. In addition to performances throughout the U.S. and Canada, she has had solo recitals in Singapore, Malaysia and Great Britain. McCabe has performed on National Public Radio's "Performance Today," the Canadian Broadcasting company, and PBS television. She has collaborated in chamber music recitals and concerto performances with some of the world's finest artists including David Shifrin, Peter Schickele, Yuri Mazurkevich, Carol Wincenc and Gary Karr. She frequently performs duo piano concerts with her sister, Robin McCabe.
McCabe has a doctorate of musical arts from the University of Michigan, a master's from The Juilliard School of Music, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington.
