CORVALLIS - Barbara S. Mahoney, who wrote a book about the first U.S. foreign correspondent to die in World War II, will speak about the journalist and his experiences during a free public talk on Feb. 17.
Her presentation begins at 4 p.m. in the Center for the Humanities, 811 S.W. Jefferson in Corvallis.
The book, "Dispatches and Dictators: Ralph Barnes for the Herald Tribune," was published by the Oregon State University Press. Oregon native Ralph Barnes was an eyewitness to history, seeing the rise of Hitler in Germany, the reign of Mussolini in Italy, and the iron-fisted rule of Stalin in Russia. The New York Herald Tribune reporter also became the first U.S. foreign correspondent to die in combat in World War II when the British bomber in which he was a passenger crashed in 1940 Yugoslavia.
Mahoney is senior vice president for development for the Oregon Health & Science University Foundation. She has a Ph.D. in European history from Saint Louis University.
The talk is free and open to the public. Copies of her book will be available.
