CORVALLIS - Registration is now open for the winter-spring programs of the Mid-Willamette Valley Saturday Academy, a chance for middle and high school students to learn more about everything from aeromodeling to crime investigation and careers in medicine.

Most of the programs will be held on Saturdays during February, March or April. Many are one or two-session events. Saturday Academy, which is hosted by Oregon State University, is a cooperative, non-profit program in which business, academic and professional leaders provide interesting, hands-on learning opportunities in science, math and technology for students in grades 5 through 12.

Registration and more information can be obtained on the web at http://oregonstate.edu/precollege/academy, or by calling 541-737-8139. Tuition assistance is available for all Saturday Academy events, and students from Albany and Mill City schools pay half-price tuition fees.

Classes for middle school students during the winter and spring include keyboarding and study skills; water supply and treatment; technology for girls; companion animal veterinary practice; creative engineering design for girls; creative engineering design for boys; newspaper reporting; and aeromodeling. Registration can also be made for some summer workshops, including computers and web pages.

Classes for high school students include electrathon car redesign; crime scene investigation; the world of architecture; research on AIDS and cancer; systems thinking; biochemical and molecular biology techniques; careers in imaging sciences; glassblowing; veterinary medicine; drawing with color; careers in medicine; materials science and engineering; and sound in the sea.
