CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's Opera Workshop, working in conjunction with Opera Theater Corvallis, has produced a child-friendly opera set to debut this month.
"Oh, That's Opera" contains comedic scenes from several works, such as "The Marriage of Figaro," "The Magic Flute," "Carmen," "Die Fledermaus," "The Mikado" and "Ruddigore." Most of the show will be performed in English, with the exception of the "Carmen" quintet, which will be performed in French, and "The Marriage of Figaro," in Italian.
The program will be staged at several local schools, while two public performances are set at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 13) at OSU's Benton Hall. Admission is $5 for children and students, and $10 for adults. Tickets will be sold at the door. Carol Lucas, opera music director, is the former chorus master for the Portland Opera. She was also the conductor for last year's OSU and Opera Theater Corvallis production of "Cosi fan tutte."
Stage director Jan Powell has experience as an actor, director and arts administrator. She directed productions for Bel Canto Northwest and founded the Tyger's Heart Shakespeare Co. in Portland.
The OTC Opera Outreach program is possible through funding from the Benton County Foundation, and through a gift from Ed and Kathy Hosack.
