CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State University Theatre will hold auditions for the production of Jean Anouilh's modernization of the classic Greek tragedy "Antigone" on Sunday and Monday, Nov. 13-14, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Withycombe Hall main theater on the OSU campus.

The tryouts are open to all students and community members interested in performing in the play or serving on the production crew. Participants need attend only one of the evening auditions.

The play calls for eight men and four women ranging in age from their 20s to 50s. Theater staff members recommend that people auditioning read through an English translation of the play before trying out. Scripts for the OSU production are available in the University Theatre Office, 141 Withycombe Hall. Prepared audition material (a memorized monologue) is not necessary.

Rehearsals typically will take place Sunday through Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. Performances will be Feb. 9-11 and Feb. 16-18.

Academic credit is available for being in the cast or production crew.

Sophocles' original play examines the struggle to reconcile personal values with the needs of society so it is not surprising that modern adaptations tend to appear during times of national conflict. French playwright Anouilh staged his adaptation in Paris during the Nazi occupation of World War II, evading Nazi censorship by reducing the scope of the play to a domestic tragedy.
