CORVALLIS - Auditions will be held June 22-23 at Oregon State University for the University Theatre's summer production of "Steel Magnolias," Robert Harling's poignant and humorous look at life as experienced by a handful of women in the deep South.
The production will run Aug. 4-6 and Aug. 11-13 at OSU's Withycombe Hall theater. OSU faculty member Charlotte Headrick, a native southerner, will direct.
Set in a small town beauty salon in Louisiana, "Steel Magnolias" provides equal parts laughter and tears, Headrick says, and includes six "fabulous roles for talented actresses," ranging in age from 18 to the late 60s. She describes them as Truvy, the 40ish salon owner; Annelle, the 19-year-old assistant who has a checkered past; Clairee, a 60ish widow of the former mayor; Shelby, the town beauty, who is in her 20s; M'Lynn, a 50-year-old prominent career women; and Ouiser, a 60ish, lovable curmudgeon.
Auditions will begin at 7 p.m. at the Withycombe Hall main stage, and will consist of reading from the script. Scripts may be checked out for 24 hours at the University's Theatre's main office in Withycombe.
For more information, call the office at 541-737-2853, or the director at 541-737-4918. Auditions are open to all.
