CORVALLIS - Oregon State University's annual Native American Longhouse Salmon Bake starts at noon on Thursday, May 19.

Free and open to the public, the three-hour event in the courtyard between Snell and Waldo Halls features a variety of foods and entertainment.

The event is sponsored by OSU's student-run Native American Longhouse. For information, contact Longhouse staff at 541-737-2738.

Later that evening, Native American writer, poet and filmmaker Sherman Alexie will talk about contemporary Native American life in a humor-filled lecture at OSU.

"Without Reservations: An Urban Indian's Comic, Poetic, and Highly Irreverent Look at the World" starts at 7:30 p.m. at OSU's LaSells Stewart Center. A Spokane/Coeur d' Alene Indian, Alexie wrote the screenplay for the 1998 motion picture "Smoke Signals," which was based on one of his stories.

The salmon bake and Alexie's talk are part of a week of activities on the OSU campus related to Native American issues and culture.
