CORVALLIS - A leading researcher in the field of childhood behavior will deliver the College of Health and Human Sciences Dean's Lecture at Oregon State University on Monday, April 18, and kick off a new lecture series called "Pathways to Resilience."

The lecture, by Nancy Eisenberg of Arizona State University, will begin at 2 p.m. in the Joyce Powell Leadership Center in the Memorial Union at OSU. It is free and open to the public.

Eisenberg will speak on the topic, "Self-Regulation: The Key to Children's Adjustment and Resiliency." She is the Regent's Professor of Psychology at ASU, where she has gained a reputation for her studies of factors that may cause children to develop a tendency toward altruistic, apathetic or destructive behaviors.

She pioneered the use of psychophysiological measures to study the development of emotion and empathy in children. Eisenberg and ASU colleague Richard Fabes established a blend of developmental and social psychology to examine how children develop positive behaviors and information on how parents and educators can affect the formation of those behaviors.

The Pathways to Resilience lecture series, sponsored by OSU's College of Health and Human Sciences and supported by the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and other campus units, focuses on understanding how children and youth overcome diversity to become contributing citizens. Other lectures in the series include:

May 11: "Reading, Writing, Readiness: Evidence-based Developmentally Appropriate Early Literacy Practices in Programs for At-Risk Preschoolers," by Karen Diamond, Purdue University; Memorial Union Room 206; 2 p.m.

May 25: "Cultural Adaptation of 'Best Practice' Interventions for Latino Families: Methods and Effects," by Charles Martinez, Oregon Social Learning Center and Oregon Prevention Research Center, Memorial Union Room 208; 4 p.m.

June 3: "Looking for Trouble in Paradise: Lessons Learned from Longitudinal Studies of Resilience," by Emmy Werner, University of California-Davis, Joyce Powell Leadership Center in the Memorial Union; 2 p.m.
