CORVALLIS - Ron Hathaway is the new superintendent of Oregon State University's Klamath Experiment Station in Klamath Falls. His new position is in addition to his role as staff chair of OSU's Klamath County office of the OSU Extension Service. The appointment is effective immediately.
"Hathaway's experience in the Klamath basin positions him well for his new role," said Thayne Dutson, dean and director of OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences and Agricultural Experiment Station. "His wealth of experience and valuable perspectives will allow him to lead OSU's research and Extension programs in the region to be responsive to challenging local issues related to the economy, water supplies and the environment."
Trained as an animal scientist, Hathaway has been with OSU since 1972, when he began his career as a livestock and dairy production agent with the Klamath County office of the OSU Extension Service. In 1985, he assumed the role of the staff chair in the same office and has been there ever since. Over the years he has worked closely with the beef industry to help solve problems relating to nutrition and forage utilization, reproduction efficiency and health of cattle.
In recent years, he has served with other scientists at OSU, researching and analyzing agricultural and water issues in the Klamath Basin. He has also worked to help livestock ranchers in Ethiopia and the former Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan.
Hathaway succeeds Ken Rykbost, who served as superintendent at the Klamath Station for almost 18 years. Rykbost, who has retired, will continue to work for a while on a part-time basis.
