CORVALLIS, Ore. – Mario E. Magaña, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Oregon State University, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to do research and lecture at the National University of La Plata in Argentina during 2007-08.

Magaña will start a research collaboration with the Argentine faculty at the Department of Electronics Engineering, and will teach a graduate-level course on the fundamental aspects of a typical ultra wideband electronic communication system.

Magaña’s interest in developing a research collaboration in Argentina is based on the fact that OSU has had many outstanding doctoral students who came to OSU “extremely well prepared” by the Department of Electronics Engineering at the National University of La Plata.

“I am excited about bringing engineering expertise from Oregon State to the students in Argentina, and about learning from the students and faculty there,” Magaña said. “I hope to bring back to OSU this new international research collaboration and offer a new graduate course on ultra wideband communications.”

Magaña received his doctorate in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1987 and is the author of more than 60 technical and scientific papers. His current areas of research are in the fields of mobile wireless communications, automatic control applications and mathematical modeling of biological systems.

The Fulbright Scholar Program sends about 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year, to lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of professional fields. The prestigious program has been supported for more than 50 years by the United States Department of State.
