CORVALLIS, Ore. – A new degree in accounting has been approved for the College of Business at Oregon State University.

This is the first time in the history of the college that it has offered a second undergraduate degree. Until now, the College of Business has offered a business administration degree with an option in Accounting, Finance, General Business, International Business, Management, Marketing Management, and Management Information Systems.

Starting this spring term, students will be able to choose a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. The new degree was approved by the Oregon State Board of Higher Education on March 2.

“Offering our students the opportunity to choose a major in accountancy furthers our goal of graduating life-ready business professionals from our college,” said Ilene Kleinsorge, dean of the college. “This new degree is part of the strategic framework for our continued transition as a professional school.”

Roger Graham, professor of accounting, was instrumental in pursuing the new degree.

“The accountancy degree is part of a package of changes we have made to better prepare students for the profession of accounting,” Graham said.

“Our hope is that the degree, coupled with the entrance and ethics requirements put into place last fall, produces cohorts of dedicated students that are focused on the study of accounting.”

Accounting already is a strong program in the College of Business. OSU students have surpassed the national average on the Certified Public Accounting Exam for the last two years.

There will be a public celebration for the new degree at Bexell Hall on the OSU campus from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 19. There will be drawings for prizes and refreshments served.
