CORVALLIS, Ore. – “The Big World,” a new exhibit curated and produced by Julie Green, will show at Oregon State University from Feb. 9-13.

The exhibit will take place at the West Galley of Fairbanks Hall, located at the corner of 26th Street and Jefferson on campus. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Green is an associate professor in the Department of Art at OSU. A nationally-respected painter, she is perhaps best known for her ongoing project called “The Last Supper,” where she has illustrated more than 300 final meal requests of death row inmates.

This is Green’s first time serving as a curator on an exhibit. In October, Green and a group of other artists traveled to southern China and Tibet. The video interviews and artwork from her trip are the subjects of The Big World exhibition.

“This exhibit attempts to shed light on contemporary art for the non-art viewer and to introduce audiences to these artists,” Green said. “I wanted to give the artists an opportunity to explain their concept, and in some small way promote understanding and peace.”

The featured artists will be:

• Tsering Nyandak, painter, Lhasa, Tibet;
• Zhang Phing, painter, Lhasa, Tibet;
• Chen Changwei, sculptor, Kunming, Yunnan, China;
• Tala Madani, painter, Amsterdam, Netherlands;
• Sharon Lacey, painter, Charleston, S.C.;
• Yang Hanmei, painter, Chendu, Sichuan, China;
• Susan Knight, paper cutter, Omaha, Neb.;
• Norie Sato, sculptor, Seattle, Wash.;
• Xue Song, painter, Shanghai, China;
• Ding Yi, painter, Shanghai, China;
• Clay Lohmann, quilter, Corvallis, Ore.

Each artist is featured for about 10 minutes in a video interview, explaining their process and the concepts behind their art.

“I wanted to explore concepts behind the art, and how it might reflect current trends, both politically and socially,” Green said.

“The Big World” was funded entirely by a 2008 General Research Fund Award from OSU.
