CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University will host the annual Oregon National Association for Multicultural Education, or NAME Conference, which will bring educators together to discuss subjects of diversity, culture, equity and justice, on May 6.

The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus.

The event will include keynote addresses, presentations, workshops, documentary screenings and panel discussions that will look at unique ways of offering multicultural education in the 21st century. Session topics include:

• How teachers can talk about race with their students;
• Holocaust education;
• Native American justice issues;
• Working with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students;
• Working with families and students of poverty;
• Teaching literacy in the high school from a social justice perspective.

The keynote speakers are Carl Grant and Christine Sleeter. Grant is the Hoefs-Bascom Professor of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and will speak on the subject of "Multicultural Education & Achievement: Investing in Education Solutions for Tomorrow." Grant's talk is at 9:15 a.m.

Sleeter is a professor emeritus at California State University. She will speak on "Intellectually Challenging Teaching in a Multicultural Classroom." Sleeter's talk is at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
