Most of the humpbacks were seen between about 67 and 68 degrees north latitude, which is slightly north of Kotzebue, according to the data. It appears that there is some sort of feeding hotspot near the Inupiat village of Point Hope that is drawing large numbers of humpback whales, said lead author Kate Stafford of Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute.
If you think of the human body as consisting of a team of organs that plays against a defense of diseases, then the AT1 receptor is a key player — especially when it comes to attacks on the heart and kidneys. Science Pub Lebanon: Randall Milstein, a senior instructor in the physics department at Oregon State, will discuss the annular solar eclipse, or ring of fire eclipse, Oct. 11 in Lebanon. On Oct. 14, portions of western North America will experience an annular solar eclipse, which occurs when the moon, at its farthest distance from Earth, passes between the sun and Earth, and partially blocks the sun resulting in a "ring of fire" eclipse. 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at Tallman Brewing. NEW! 26th Street: As part of The LaSells Stewart Center Mechanical & Roof Renewal project, there will be short, intermittent delays for vehicles traveling on SW 26th Street near The LaSells Stewart Center from 7 a.m. to noon, Oct. 11. A forklift will be unloading materials and crossing the path of travel for brief intervals. Both lanes of 26th Street will remain open during this activity. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic around the area. Drivers may be signaled to stop while the forklift is crossing 26th Street, but the activity is not expected to create major delays. In addition, the east sidewalk on 26th Street will be closed from Western Boulevard to The LaSells Stewart Center. The crosswalk at the entrance to The LaSells Stewart Center will also be closed during this activity. The west sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians.
Student Legacy Park: The Student Legacy Park fields and tennis courts have reopened, but other areas within the park will remain closed through Thursday, Oct. 12. The parking areas and sidewalk on SW Washington Way will remain closed through Oct. 12 along with the basketball courts. While the entry points to the park along Washington Way will remain closed, access to the park will be available from SW 26th Street, SW Intramural Lane and SW 30th Street. Washington Way: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, Washington Way between 17th and 26th Streets will remain closed through Tuesday, Oct. 31. In addition to the road closure, the sidewalk on the north side of Washington Way between 17th and 26th Streets will be closed. Pedestrians may use the multi-use path on the south side of Washington Way as a detour.
Traffic change on SW 26th St. to improve safety: Southwest 26th St. stretching from SW Jefferson Way north to NW Orchard Avenue has been changed from two-way vehicle traffic to one-way, northbound traffic only. The street has been updated with new signage, designated north and south bicycle lanes and other street markings designed to clarify and enhance the pedestrian and bicyclist priority zone. This change supports a more safe and comfortable campus that prioritizes pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users and minimizes conflicts between vehicles and people, especially during class change times and implements a key recommendation in OSU’s Transportation Plan and the city’s Transportation System Plan.
