Oregon nuclear reactor company NuScale begins trading on Wall Street (Oregonian)

NuScale, founded in 2007 with technology developed at Oregon State University, says its reactor design is safer to operate and less expensive than conventional nuclear reactors. Now headquartered in Portland, the company hopes to capitalize on renewed enthusiasm for nuclear energy as a carbon-free alternative to coal and natural gas.
 

Explosives threat made at Oregon State University (KMTR)

"Out of an abundance of caution, the university issued a public safety alert at 8:32 p.m. Monday and again Tuesday at 8:40 a.m. to inform community members about the call to 911 and threat," said university spokesperson Steve Clark. "Overnight, police and public officers from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Corvallis Police Department and OSU Public Safety systematically searched the OSU Corvallis campus and remained vigilant."
 

Study: Huge declines in forest birds due to clearcutting, monocultures (BirdWatching)

Bird species that live in wooded areas are under stress from human-caused changes to forest composition, according to new research led by Oregon State University that quantifies the effects of forest degradation on bird habitat.

Oregon State University’s Science Pub on Monday, May 9, will focus on the perspectives and complexities associated with responsible wind energy generation off the Oregon Coast. 
 

Oregon hazelnuts rebound after fierce ice storm (Natural Resource Report)

Nik Wiman, an orchard specialist at Oregon State University, said newer varieties of hazelnut trees proved more resilient in the ice storm as well as to diseases. Farmers who had to replant old orchards destroyed by the ice will need to wait for the harvest as the trees mature slowly.
 

Codling moth control: Back to biology (Good Fruit Grower)

Chris Adams, an entomologist at Oregon State University, urged growers not to cut corners on trapping, either. “Trapping is really the foundation of IPM,” said Adams, chair of the codling moth task force. Trapping allows growers to confirm model predictions, inform accurate spray timing, estimate size of later generations and detect patterns in the population.

David Rothwell, Associate Professor, Barbara E. Knudson Endowed Chair in Family Policy, College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University, also advocated for state and local governments to step in when the federal level policies fail working parents.

NEW! The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will meet virtually Thursday: The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will hold a public meeting on Thursday, May 5, to discuss matters related to the search for the university’s next president. The meeting will be held remotely at 1 p.m. Trustees will discuss general compensation and benefits for the position of president and will consider an action item regarding reimbursing finalist candidates for certain professional advisors’ fees that may be related to contract negotiations. Immediately following this public session, the Board of Trustees will hold an executive session to consider a slate of semifinalist candidates to be invited for interviews with the Board. The executive session will be held in keeping with Oregon law – ORS 192.660(2)(a) that allows a public body to meet in executive session to consider the employment of a public officer, employee, staff member or individual agent. Members of the public can join the public portion of the meeting through the remote conferencing service Zoom. Options for joining the meeting and instructions for providing comment during a testimony period held before the board votes on the action item are located under “Meeting Details” at this webpage. Managing Worry and Anxiety: Worries are thoughts we have about the future that generate fear. They arrive in the form of a “what if?” and generate dire warnings about terrible consequences that await us. Unfortunately, these warnings we give ourselves are generally overblown and focused on hypothetical problems that probably won’t happen. This training will address how worry habits develop and methods of intervening with worry and anxiety. May 5, noon. Register here.

Interim President Johnson to Meet with Faculty: Interim President Johnson and the Faculty Senate Executive Committee are continuing the longstanding tradition of sponsoring small group faculty conversations with academic, research and professional faculty. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer.
