And if the moist forest stays put, it is holding onto carbon. According to a study led by Beverly Law at Oregon State University, the Pacific Northwest possesses “some of the highest carbon density forests in the world, which can store carbon in trees for 800 years or more.”
This is the bold approach taken in a new study from Oregon State University (OSU) and University of St Andrews scientists, who, working with the US National Science Foundation, have unlocked a 50,000-year timeline of atmospheric carbon dioxide – thanks to tiny bubbles trapped in Antarctic ice, frozen in time miles below the Earth's surface. Jeremy Kiszka, an associate professor of biological sciences at Florida International University, summarized the trip for The Conversation. Along with Kathleen Stafford, an associate professor at Oregon State University's Marine Mammal Institute, and with help from the University of Seychelles and Oceanic Films, the group made two trips to the Seychelles archipelago off the coast of east Africa between 2020 and 2021.
Jenifer Cruickshank is an assistant professor and dairy extension specialist at Oregon State University in Corvallis. She joins us to tell us everything we need to know about bird flu in dairy cattle.
Irrigation specialist Maria Zamora Re has been at Oregon State University for three years but made her first public presentation specifically to the tree fruit industry on May 8 at a Washington State University field day near Prosser.
The study was conducted by Oregon State University researchers, who led a large-scale survey along the Oregon and Washington coasts, finding nearly 300 individual hybrids of European and American beach grass.
She said the U.S. Forest service officials "would like to give a big shout out to the Oregon State Beaver students who took the time to clean up and set a great example to all who visit Shasta Lake."
More than 80 undergraduate students from 12 degree programs at Oregon State University – Cascades will exhibit and talk about their research projects during the 11th Annual Research and Scholarship Symposium on Wednesday, May 22.
The goal of a new project led by Oregon State University Extension Service is to create a fast-acting information network among Cooperative Extension agents and veterinarians in the departments of agriculture in three western states – Oregon, California and Idaho – to prepare for foreign diseases such as foot-and-mouth.

Offshore Religion: Considering Religion from the Perspective of the Ocean. Scholarship on religion, like historical, sociological, literary, cultural and most other humanistic and social scientific scholarship, has been predominantly terracentric. Richard J. Callahan, Jr., a fellow in Yale University’s Material and Visual Cultures of Religion program, will explore the study of religion offshore and pay particular attention to the 19th century American whaling industry, and Indigenous whaling practices. 3 p.m. May 15 in MU Room 208; free and open to all.

Political science lecture: Gregory Leslie, political science, Ohio State University, will speak on “Permeable group boundaries: The unusual centrality of context among biracials.” Though one in 10 Americans are multiracial, contextual theories fail to account for individuals with multiple racial in-groups. Among biracials, context matters more — greater flexibility to interact as in-group members intensifies responsiveness to racial cues and endows exceptional latitude to adopt different groups’ preferences. Automated Driving System research: The School of Civil and Construction Engineering and the School of Psychological Science are seeking paid volunteers for research studies. The purpose of this research study is to make Automated Driving System (ADS) vehicles safer for pedestrians with disabilities.To participate in one of the studies, you must identify as having a visual, hearing, and/or mobility disability, and be at least 18 years old. Volunteers must commit 60 minutes to the research and will either wear a VR headset or a light-weight wearable device. College of Engineering Oregon Stater Award Nominations: Nominations close Monday, May 20. The College of Engineering is now accepting nominations for the 2024 Oregon Stater Awards. These awards honor outstanding alumni for their contributions to the engineering profession and to Oregon State University. Awards will be given in three categories, determined by length of career and accomplishments: Engineering Hall of Fame, Academy of Distinguished Engineers and Council of Outstanding Early Career Engineers.
