Dune: The 'terraformed' Oregon dunes that inspired Frank Herbert's sci-fi epic (BBC News)

Today, a string of small to medium-size towns dot the Oregon coast, filled with beach cottages, artisanal bakeries, and art galleries, and it is a popular vacation spot for families and retirees. It was all made possible by the earnest terraforming schemes imported by European settlers more than a century ago, says Sally Hacker, a coastal ecologist at Oregon State University who studies the Oregon dunes.

OSU, OHSU researchers closing in on genetic treatments for hereditary lung disease, vision loss (KTVZ)

Researchers who work with tiny drug carriers known as lipid nanoparticles have developed a new type of material capable of reaching the lungs and the eyes, an important step toward genetic therapy for hereditary conditions like cystic fibrosis and inherited vision loss. The study led by Gaurav Sahay and Yulia Eygeris of the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy and Renee Ryals of Oregon Health & Science University is being published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The LCLP honors Leticia Carson on the Benton County land that she settled through storytelling, living history, land stewardship, community building and healing. Retired SCARC director Larry Landis, “co-instigator” of the LCLP and the project’s historical consultant, will share Letitia’s story and discuss the broad range of work of the LCLP since its establishment in 2020.

Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology (EECB) Seminar: Michelle Nijhuis, author of “Beloved Beasts: Fighting for Life in an Age of Extinction,” will give a talk entitled “How to Talk About Conservation So People Will Listen.” Nijhuis is a longtime contributing editor of High Country News and has reported on science and the environment for National Geographic, the Atlantic and the New York Times Magazine. 4-5 p.m., March 6 in LINC 302 or Zoom: beav.es/eecb.

Water Resources Engineering Seminar Series: "Integrated Modeling of C and N Cycling from Batch to Watershed Scales" presented by Xingyuan Chen of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. International Women’s Day Celebration: Join the OSU community at 5 p.m., March 7 in the Memorial Union Main Lounge for the International Women’s Day Celebration. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The reception co-hosted by President Jayathi Murthy and Provost Edward Feser aims to recognize and celebrate women at OSU. 

OSU Theatre Presents: The Learned Ladies: The road to true love never runs smoothly and especially in this satirical comedy by the witty and masterful Molière. Set in 1672, Clitandre seeks the hand of his beloved Henriette, but her mother Philaminte has other plans for her youngest daughter. Trickery and scheming ensues as Molière boldly critiques gender roles and the hypocrisy of intellectual pretention. 7:30 p.m. March 7–9 and 15–16  and 2 p.m., March 17. The Little Gallery Presents – Perseverance: A Tribute to Grace and Resilience: In celebration of International Women’s Day, The Little Gallery presents Perseverance: A Tribute to Grace and Resilience, an exhibition showing a selection of works from regional artist Vicki Idema. This exhibition explores the artist’s use of clay and paper to illustrate and bring awareness to some of the social and environmental issues still affecting women and to highlight those who overcame obstacles to reach their goals. The exhibit runs from March 8 to April 18 in The Little Gallery of Fairbanks Hall. There will be an opening and reception from 3:30 – 5 p.m., March 7. Admission is free.

Dance celebration: Take time to let go, cut loose and honor your movement expression in a welcoming space. We will move to engaging music and close with a meditative cool down. Provost’s Lecture featuring Diana B. Henriques: Join us for the first Provost’s Lecture of the 2023-24 series, featuring Diana B. Henriques, award-winning financial journalist and author. Overcoming Overdose @ OSU: OSU Student Health's Alcohol & Other Drug Prevention team will host a lunch and learn workshop for students and staff on April 4, from noon to 1 p.m., in MU 109. Overdose deaths among youth and young adults have increased in recent years, and the most common drugs involved are synthetic opioids including fentanyl. This workshop will allow the students and staff to actively participate by providing resources (including Narcan kits and face shields for CPR), preventative education related to substance misuse, and an opportunity to positively impact the resiliency of our student population. Lunch provided for the first 50 registered guests.

Lucid Dreaming 8-Week Series: Instruction into the amazing interior adventure of the nighttime world of sleep and dreams, through learning and community. Transdisciplinary Research Seed Funds: Up to $100K is available to support OSU faculty as they build a transdisciplinary research team or seek to sustain momentum of an existing team and/or scale-up collaborative research efforts towards the submission of large proposals that directly support Prosperity Widely Shared: The Oregon State Plan. Traffic and Maintenance

Washington Way: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, a section of the southbound lane on 26th St. will be closed just north of Washington Way. The west sidewalk will be closed between the crosswalk at Dixon Recreation Center and Washington Way. This closure will take place March 6 and 7. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic in both directions around the closure. Drivers should expect delays.

Parking lots closed: As part of the Jen-Hsun & Lori Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex project, the Park Terrace St. East and Park Terrace St. West (A2) parking lots will be permanently closed, starting Monday, March 18 (view map). SW Park Terrace Place will also be permanently closed north of Plageman Student Health Center. Construction fencing will be placed around the area in preparation for further construction activity.

Intersection closure: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, the Washington Way and 30th Street intersection will be closed March 4 through April 15.
