From coast to coast for four decades, Jon Franklin’s byline heralded a new path for journalists seeking to create the art of real life. With his landmark 1986 book, “Writing for Story,” Franklin pushed news writers to seize the literary tools of Chekhov and Steinbeck and build “chronologies of meaning” on the foundation of newsgathering. He taught at Oregon State University and University of Oregon. (see also Washington Post)
Marine heat waves appear to trigger earlier reproduction, high mortality in early life stages and fewer surviving juvenile Pacific cod in the Gulf of Alaska, a new study from Oregon State University shows.
The authors of Wednesday’s paper said more research is needed to confirm their theories. Hersh, who’s now a researcher at Oregon State University, said she hopes to examine dogs’ brains, heart rates and other vitals to understand what the animals think and feel while wagging their tails. Chris Dunn, assistant professor at Oregon State University’s College of Forestry, spent seven years fighting fires in Oregon and has seen the challenges firsthand. Firefighters must make urgent decisions with limited information. Often, they can only understand situations by physically entering dangerous scenarios.
Indigenous stewardship of Pacific Northwest forests as a way of increasing forests’ climate resiliency, particularly related to wildfires, will be the topic of Oregon State University’s Science Pub on Feb. 7.
Jim Rivers of the Oregon State University College of Forestry looked at nearly 800 large-diameter Douglas-fir trees that had been subjected to snag creation treatment in southwestern Oregon in the early 2000s. He learned that chain-saw topping was the best way to have a rotting, standing dead tree after a couple of decades, especially if the topped tree had minimal live branches left in in place.

Advances in Battery Research 2024: The College of Science’s David Ji, who researches sustainable battery technologies, will present Feb. 21 at the online symposium Advances in Battery Research 2024 organized by Technology Networks. Ji’s presentation is titled “Opportunities and challenges of aqueous metal batteries” and will encompass the large picture of energy storage, the requirements of storage batteries and results from the Ji lab regarding fundamental solutions in enabling aqueous metal batteries for storage purposes. Student Veteran of the Year: Angelina Trillo, a senior in political science at Oregon State University from Portland, has been named 2023 Student Veteran of the Year by the Student Veterans of America. The announcement was made Jan. 16. As president of OSU’s Student Veterans Association and an Army Reserve medic for her unit, she has been praised by supervisors as vital to the university’s veteran affairs operations and is a key member of staff. Research Fellowship Program: The Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (NW CASC) Fellowship Program is now accepting proposals from graduate students and post docs for our 2024-2025 Research Fellowship Program, which supports research related to climate adaptation for Northwest natural and cultural resource management and provides training in developing decision-relevant science. The NW CASC Fellowship Program funding will be available as early as fall term 2024 to support research performed during the 2024-2025 academic year. The deadline to submit proposals is March 11.
