Forest managers can use a method to help offset the cost of managing mature Douglas-fir stands, according to a study by Oregon State University.
Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center will host a virtual Marine Science Day Saturday, April 9, that will include a live shark dissection and a talk about a rare whale sighting off the coast of Oregon.
The Oregon State University Food Drive raised the equivalent of 447,393 meals in February, equating to 71 meals raised per university employee, the most of any participating public university in the state.

Eastern filbert blight has historically been a curse to the Pacific Northwest hazelnut industry. That is, until Oregon State University released several blight-resistant varieties.

Spin–a newly commissioned piece written by Dana Reason, who teaches contemporary music at Oregon State University–had a delightfully asymmetrical feel with an intriguing blend of melodic lines, bouncy syncopation, and crunchy chords. Campbell provided a wild off-the-cuff riff that was punctuated by interjections from his colleagues. Sporadic exchanges were followed by gentler passages that gradually built to an emphatic conclusion, suggesting that the spinning sounds finally came to a rest.

Free bike registration event scheduled for April 6: Oregon State University’s Department of Public Safety and Police will be holding a bike registration event this Wednesday, April 6, noon to 2 p.m. at the McNary Dining Quad. The event is free to students, faculty, staff and community members. Registering your bike with 529 Garage is a tool used by law enforcement to reduce bike theft and obtain information such as serial numbers and photos in the event your bike is stolen. Free.

Orange Media wins awards: Orange Media Network students at Oregon State University won a first place for breaking news coverage and placed as finalists in four categories total in the Region 10 Mark of Excellence Awards sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists. Sukhjot Sal, a reporter and copy editor for The Daily Barometer, won first place for breaking news for her October 2021 coverage of an anti-abortion protest on campus. First-place winners will go on to compete at the national level among other regional MOE winners from the 12 SPJ regions.

Search Advocate Workshop: OSU Search Advocate workshops for the rest of this academic/fiscal year are available for registration. Search advocates are content-neutral outside process advisors who participate on employee search committees; their goal is to encourage culture and practices that favor equity, validity and diversity. The initial workshop series is a sequence of four 4-hour Zoom workshops. Those who complete the series may have their names added to the Search Advocate Directory and will be eligible to serve as advocates until September 2023. Cat study: The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking cats with chronic kidney disease to participate in a research study evaluating variation of the major blood kidney values over time. Participation in this study involves: bringing your cat to the OSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital once a week for six weeks; a $125 Visa gift card and three months of kidney prescription diet upon completion. Cats have a blood draw once a week for six weeks and receive labs and kidney ultrasound at enrollment. HR email: The Human Resources Recruitment Services Team has a new email address: HRRecruitment@oregonstate.edu. We have reorganized the Recruitment teams into one unified team under the HR Service Center. We will no longer use the separate UPHR and Hovland SC Recruitment inboxes. This new email address replaces UPHR.Recruitment@oregonstate.edu and hovlandsc.recruitment@oregonstate.edu. We will be doing a soft launch effective April 1 to give our customers time to adjust before removing the previously used administrative and academic emails. Emails sent to the old inboxes will forward to the new email address until May 31. Beginning June 1, emails sent to the old inboxes will bounce back as undeliverable.

Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available around the Corvallis campus. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits at the following locations: Residence Hall Service Centers (Arnold, McNary and West); Lab tent outside Plageman Hall; Memorial Union Info Desk and Student Experience Center Info Desk. Sidewalk closure on Jefferson: For work related to the Community Hall Slope Project, a sidewalk closure on the north side of Jefferson Avenue from 15th Street to Benton Place is scheduled (view map). The sidewalk closure is scheduled for Monday, April 4, through Sunday, May 15. Pedestrian detour signs will be in place throughout the closure.
