Blue whales have made a comeback from the days of the late 1800s to the mid-1900s when whale hunting nearly annihilated the population. These days, they can be found in all oceans except the Arctic, and off the U.S. West Coast, including Oregon, where they come to feed. “It’s not uncommon to run into clusters,” said Lisa Ballance, director of Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute. “It’s a happy story.”

Climate change is affecting rural workers in myriad ways (The Daily Yonder)

Lauren Kraemer, associate professor at Oregon State University, who focuses on public health issues that impact farm workers, said rural workers face a number of issues due to climate change. While this year’s extreme heat is one threat, others are smoke and air quality from wildfires burning in Canada, as well as increased threats from disease-carrying bugs and exacerbated mental health issues.
