Oregon State University gets millions to study attitudes toward offshore wind (Oregon Capital Chronicle)

A team of Oregon State University researchers were recently awarded $2.5 million to study the attitudes and feelings coastal residents have about potential offshore wind energy projects. 
 

Celebrate Oregon Coast sharks with Newport's Sharktoberfest, Oct. 14 (Oregon Coast Beach Connection)

Part of Newport goes bonkers for the sharks in a couple of weeks, as the Hatfield Marine Science Center and its Big Fish Lab host Sharktoberfest on October 14. More than just eye-popping Oregon coast science (as if that wasn't enough), this event brings food, wine and beer to the conversation about sharks, which includes yummy partnerships with Ultralife Cafe and OSU's Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center. 
 

New species of tiny wasp comes with mysterious, cloud-like at ends of antennae (Tech and Science Post)

The female micro-wasp was described from 100-million-year-old Burmese amber in a study led by George Poinar Jr., who holds a courtesy appointment in the Oregon State University College of Science. Findings were published in the journal Life.

OSU-Cascades Science Pub: Oregon State University – Cascades’ Science Pub series continues on Oct. 10 with a discussion titled “You Are What You Click” by Dr. Brian Primack, dean of the OSU College of Health, on how continual exposure to social media can impact mental health. The Science Pub will take place from 5:30-7:15 p.m. in Edward J. Ray Hall at OSU-Cascades. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for networking and dining, with the presentation to follow at 6 p.m. Registration is required. Science Pub Lebanon: Randall Milstein, a senior instructor in the physics department at Oregon State, will discuss the annular solar eclipse, or ring of fire eclipse, Oct. 11 in Lebanon. On Oct. 14, portions of western North America will experience an annular solar eclipse, which occurs when the moon, at its farthest distance from Earth, passes between the sun and Earth, and partially blocks the sun resulting in a "ring of fire" eclipse. 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at Tallman Brewing. Volunteer with local youth: Discover how you can become involved and make a difference for the youth in your community. NEW! Comment period open: An updated draft Forest Management Plan for the Elliott State Research Forest has been released and the public comment period is now open. Since early 2019, OSU and the Oregon Department of State Lands have been working collaboratively to explore transforming the Elliott State Forest into a publicly owned research forest. Review the draft plan and provide your comments; the public comment period is open until Friday, Oct. 27.

NEW! Sustainability conference: The Call For Speaker and Session Proposals for the Washington Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference is open until Oct. 13. WOHESC is March 4-6 at Western Washington University. The 2024 theme is "Learning From Place: Solutions Beyond Boundaries," which focuses on using the environment to ground inquiries that span politically drawn boundaries to be inclusive of place within a bioregion.

Corvallis 2023 Community Survey: The community is invited to share their feedback on all aspects of life in Corvallis through the biennial Corvallis Community Survey. The results will be compiled and shared with the City Council and public. Office of University Human Resources Learning & Development is now accepting FYI Friday presentation proposals for Winter 2024: Does your unit have a new or existing service, process, system, policy or research you want to share with the campus community? FYI Friday is a program where campus partners are invited to present what they’re working on to a broad audience of professional faculty, academic faculty and classified staff. Human-robot interaction: The Human-Machine Teaming Laboratory in Oregon State University’s Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute is conducting a research experiment to study human-robot interaction for peer-based environments. Participants will be trained as first responders and complete a series of disaster response tasks with a robot teammate and will complete anonymous questionnaires. The experiment requires participants to complete two separate two-hour sessions. Participants who complete the entire evaluation will receive $60. Affordable Learning Grant: OSU's Open Educational Resources Unit is accepting proposals for the Affordable Learning Grant until Oct 23. The grant provides funding to adopt, adapt or author an open educational resource, such as a textbook. An open textbook is one that is published under an open copyright license and is made freely available online for students, faculty and the public. All funding is a department-to-department transfer. Traffic and Maintenance

Student Legacy Park: The Student Legacy Park fields and tennis courts have reopened, but other areas within the park will remain closed through Thursday, Oct. 12. The parking areas and sidewalk on SW Washington Way will remain closed through Oct. 12 along with the basketball courts. While the entry points to the park along Washington Way will remain closed, access to the park will be available from SW 26th Street, SW Intramural Lane and SW 30th Street. ADA parking spaces will be available on 30th Street, on 26th Street in front of Dixon Recreation Center and on Intramural Lane.

Oak Creek: As part of the Oak Creek Building Renovation project, the Oak Creek Building North parking lot (#3364) will be closed 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Oct. 11. View map.

Washington Way: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, Washington Way between 17th and 26th Streets will remain closed through Tuesday, Oct. 31. In addition to the road closure, the sidewalk on the north side of Washington Way between 17th and 26th Streets will be closed. Pedestrians may use the multi-use path on the south side of Washington Way as a detour.

Traffic change on SW 26th St. to improve safety: Southwest 26th St. stretching from SW Jefferson Way north to NW Orchard Avenue has been changed from two-way vehicle traffic to one-way, northbound traffic only. The street has been updated with new signage, designated north and south bicycle lanes and other street markings designed to clarify and enhance the pedestrian and bicyclist priority zone. This change supports a more safe and comfortable campus that prioritizes pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users and minimizes conflicts between vehicles and people, especially during class change times and implements a key recommendation in OSU’s Transportation Plan and the city’s Transportation System Plan.
