Two Oregon State University College of Engineering faculty members are partnering with NASA on a $525,000 National Science Foundation project to examine the role that gravity, or the lack thereof, plays in microbial growth. (see also Central Oregon Daily)
Oregon State University is known for engineering, agriculture, research, and as one of the two remaining members of the crumbling Pac-12 athletic conference. It’s not usually thought of as an arts school – but that could be changing.
Typically, dogs can recuperate from a respiratory illness on their own or with the help of antibiotics but that is not always the case with this latest illness, said Dr. Kurt Williams, director of the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University. As CEO of Indie Hops, Jim Solberg is looking for the perfect hop, not just in taste but in sustainability as well. The company works with Oregon State University plant geneticist Sean Townsend to develop hops for craft brewers.
Before you buy, though, consider some key care tips, including how to get them home, said Brooke Edmunds, a horticulturist with Oregon State University Extension Service. She advises taking a cardboard box along with you to the store and then covering the plant after getting it into the car.

Save the date: Bobbin' Through the Woods Art and Craft Fair. The holiday craft and art fair is returning to the Peavy Forest Science Center. 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Dec. 8 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Dec. 9. This year we have even more vendors, but the mission remains the same. All proceeds support Rootstock, our College of Forestry food pantry, and our food insecure students.
Holiday Tree Auction: Firs for Food Insecurity. Dec. 8-9, Peavy Forest Science Center. We have 11 decorated trees donated by different units around campus that are up for silent auction during the fair. As you move throughout the building, please stop by to have a look at the trees, place your bid and collect passport stamps to be entered to win a prize valued at over $200. All proceeds from the auction will go to Rootstock, our student food pantry. Trees are fully decorated and will be available to take home Saturday after 3 p.m. Trees donated by Starker Forests, Inc.
NEW! DFA Risk Appetite and Risk Assessment Tools: Train the Trainer. Insurance and Risk Management Services will facilitate a workshop for unit leaders and supervisors to provide exposure to the DFA risk appetite statements and risk assessment tools. Attendees will gain hands-on practice and develop the skills necessary to assist other employees in understanding and incorporating the DFA risk appetite statements and risk assessment tools into their work. Same Storm, Different Boats: Mental Health in Communities of Color. Racial and ethnic minorities often suffer from disproportionately higher rates of more severe mental health outcomes due to a range of social and economic factors: inaccessibility of culturally competent mental health care, cultural stigma, physical and mental health consequences of discrimination and more. In this workshop, a clinician presenter from Lyra Health will cover: race-based traumatic stress, stigma and cultural mistrust; barriers to accessing care and how to overcome them; culturally informed self-care strategies; and how to access culturally-responsive mental health services. NEW! Payroll Office changes in December: During the month of December, Payroll is having some work done to rearrange and add workspace in our office. Our windows will be closed and phones will go to voicemail, but we will have a representative at the front desk in B100 (Business Affairs) and will be returning phone calls and responding to emails as quickly as possible every day. A more open space will be available starting in the new year.
NEW! $15K of funding available: The OSU Advantage Accelerator is currently seeking applications that describe technology-based projects in any discipline that will move OSU-owned technologies closer to commercialization. Proposals should describe a project that requires $15,000 or less of funding to achieve an important milestone(s) connected to commercialization. Each project may be awarded up to $15,000 and should span nine months or less, beginning in January 2024. Proposals are due by 5 p.m., Dec. 8. Learn more and apply.

Internship supplement: New Beginnings for Tribal Students (NBTS) offers $5,000 supplemental funding for summer internships in natural sciences to self-identifying Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian undergrads enrolled at OSU. NBTS also pairs students with mentors, meets as a cohort in the summer, and includes a small scholarship and support to attend science conferences. Are you exposed to loud noise at work? Find out more about OSU’s Hearing Conservation Program and Noise Control Plan. The goal of OSU’s Hearing Conservation Program is to monitor and protect employees who have the potential to develop noise-induced hearing loss – a preventable, permanent and progressive health issue. In collaboration with Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health Services provides annual hearing tests for those exposed to loud noise on the job. Training is available through the EH&S website. Contact Occupational Health or Environmental Health and Safety with questions.
FYI Friday proposals: Office of Human Resources Learning & Development is now accepting FYI Friday presentation proposals for Winter and Spring 2024. Does your unit have a new or existing service, process, system, policy or research you want to share with the campus community? Consider FYI Friday as your venue. FYI Friday is a program where campus partners are invited to present what they’re working on to a broad audience of professional faculty, academic faculty and classified staff. Mid-Month Emergency Preparedness Topic: Clothing in Disaster. Essential clothing for a disaster supply is a commonly overlooked area of preparedness. If a person does not have the proper clothing suitable for the terrain they are in, then harsh elements such as rain, cold and snow can have catastrophic effects. Music Technology and Production (MTP) -- Call for Submissions: Calling all student songwriters and producers: MTP is looking for songwriters to produce. Selected artists will be paired with student producers to record and produce a song, which will be released on an album in 2024. Students are welcomed to submit a link to their demos by Dec. 1 to be considered for a spot on the album.

The OSU Libraries Survey: Oregon State University Libraries has contracted with Madison Avenue Collective, a local design firm, to help them update the Valley Library, Guin Library and OSU-Cascades Library websites. The first phase is to gather information about the current state of these sites. We're asking everyone in the OSU community to share their opinions anonymously. OSU community. Campus Way Closure, 26th Street to Memorial Place: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Campus Way will be closed between SW 26th Street and SW Memorial Place from Nov. 6-27 to allow for crane activity.
Kerr: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot closure has been extended until Dec. 4 to finish construction activities, including lighting installation, paving and striping. This includes the closure of the west sidewalk. ADA access is available on the east side of the building.
