Alcohol made from cheese waste could help fix dairy's whey problem (CNN)

Based on cheese production figures from the US Department of Agriculture, more than 100 billion pounds of liquid whey was produced in the United States in 2020. For most large-scale cheesemakers, this isn’t a problem, says Lisbeth Goddik, a food science professor at Oregon State University, with much of it converted into products like protein powders and animal feed. "The challenge is that the smaller cheesemakers can't afford to build these whey processing centers," she tells CNN Business. Improving drought resilience in the Rogue Valley (NEWS 10)

"We do a fair amount of work across different crops on water-use efficiency," said Gordon Jones, an Assistant Professor at the Southern Oregon Research Extension Center (a research extension of Oregon State University). "Not in every case but in many cases in the Rogue Valley there are opportunities to use a little bit less water in either the way that we manage that water or deliver it to our crops."

“We lack data and regulations on most of these,” said Susanne Brander, a scientist formerly at UNC Wilmington, who is now at Oregon State University. “Those chemicals don’t stay put. We can’t easily remove micro plastics from the environment.”

Spring is here! When to plant your garden, where to buy in Lane County (Register-Guard)

"I always recommend people sit down and do some planning: what they're going to plant, where they're going to plant it and how much seed they need," said Erica Chernoh with Oregon State University Extension Service. "Think about what you like to grow. Think about the space you have. It's good to understand how big the plants will be."
