A prized plant for regional Native Americans has been carefully cultivated for more than 3,500 years, according to an Oregon State University study. Camas is a First Foods staple for Native Americans, who traditionally baked the bulbs in earthen ovens.
The federal Department of Agriculture made changes to the hardiness zones late last year, with plenty of input from Oregon State University. Medford, for example, switched from zone 8a to 8b.
Oregon is ranked 44th in the nation for public funding of higher education and 37th in the nation for per-pupil funding, according to the latest annual State Higher Education Finance report from the Colorado-based State Higher Education Executive Officers Association. Oregon’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission is a member of the association.

Virtual lecture: Trauma-Informed Care in Education: Join Beth Rankin of the College of Education for a look at how her research is helping teachers understand and work with K-12 students who have experienced trauma. The goals of Dr. Rankin's research are to determine how effective classes have been in preparing pre-service teachers to work with students who have experienced trauma. Public Seed Library Presentation: "Growing Crops for Fermentation." Fermenting vegetables is a great way to preserve the abundance of your vegetable garden, and to add delicious flavors, textures and healthy probiotics to your diet. Come learn how to create a small garden bed plan for a variety of cool-season veggies, and another for warm-season veggies and herbs, that are wonderful for fermenting because of their characteristics from flavor to shape and length. McDonald-Dunn Research Forest Community Input Session: The College of Forestry invites you to the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest Community Input Session from 6-8 p.m., June 5 in PFSC 117. Remote participation available via Zoom. A new plan is being developed to guide management of the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest. After nearly two years of work, we have developed a suite of “management strategies” that will serve as the foundation for forest management. We now need to make decisions on how these strategies will be overlaid across the forest. At this session, we will provide an overview of decisions made to date and request your input on how we allocate land within the forest. Educational Talk by Holocaust Survivor Ben Midler: Ben Midler, now 96 years old, spent his teenage years enduring six Nazi camps, including Auschwitz. He is also the last living survivor of the Bialystok ghetto. Midler will share his experiences with OSU students and community members via Zoom at 6 p.m., June 5. A Q&A session will follow his talk. This event is made possible by the Oregon State University Holocaust Memorial Committee.

Research Advancement Academy Info Sessions: Are you an early- or mid-career faculty member at OSU with a successful research portfolio and interdisciplinary experience? Graduate opportunities: Oregon Sea Grant is currently accepting applications for its spring graduate-level opportunities, featuring the Oregon Natural Resource Policy Fellowship (NRPF) and the Malouf Marine Studies Scholarship. The NRPF provides hands-on experience in natural resource policy at the state level, while the Malouf Scholarship supports graduate students conducting societally relevant coastal research applicable to Oregon. Impact the future of online education through research: Each year, the OSU Ecampus Research Unit funds projects, up to $25,000 each, to support the research, development and scholarship efforts of faculty in online education. Many OSU colleagues have had transformative experiences in the Ecampus Research Fellows Program. Recent fellows studies highlight the ways in which these projects have advanced research in online/hybrid education. OSU ID Card update – action needed by June 30: The OSU Key Shop and the ID Center are collaborating on a project to update the building access control system and ensure that all students, faculty and staff obtain an Orange ID card. An Orange ID has a bright orange border on the front of the card and says “Orange Card” on the bottom edge. This project will impact users who received their current cards BEFORE July 2019 and did not obtain an Orange ID. If you received your current ID card after this date, no action is needed. To maintain building access, all users must obtain an Orange ID card by June 30. For more information: https://beav.es/pJG.
Campus Way: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Campus Way between SW 26th Street and SW Memorial Place will be closed May 29-June 10. The closure is necessary to allow for crane activity related to the project. Unlike recent, intermittent closures related to the project, this will be a continuous closure of Campus Way. The Kelley Engineering Center south entrance will also be closed. The north sidewalk and both bicycle lanes in this section of Campus Way will be closed during this time period.
