William Ripple, a distinguished professor in the Oregon State University College of Forestry, and former OSU postdoctoral researcher Christopher Wolf are the lead authors of the report, and 10 other U.S. and global scientists are co-authors.
“We tend to think of fire as this malicious thing that we can’t work with because it’s inherently unpredictable,” says Chris Adlam, a regional fire specialist with Oregon State University’s Extension Service who’s involved with the Rogue Valley Prescribed Burn Association.
U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley with U.S. Representative Val Hoyle today announced a federal investment of $833,127 for Oregon State University to develop food safety outreach programs.
Although the disease is not new, it appears to have gotten worse in the past five years, according to Andony Melathopoulos, an associate professor in the Department of Horticulture at OSU, and the co-principal investigator of the study.

Public Seed Library Lecture Series: Growing Sprouts and Microgreens Indoors. Come learn how to grow highly nutritious sprouts and microgreens indoors this winter from Benton County Master Gardeners Jill Farrow and Jennifer Klammer. DFA Risk Appetite and Risk Assessment Tools: Train the Trainer. NEW! Winter Storytelling: Indigenous Stories of Place. Join members of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde for an evening of storytelling in many forms including family stories, Ikanum (creation stories), contemporary stories, and readings. Some will be told in the Indigenous language then translated into English. This is a unique and first-time public event. No recordings will be allowed by the Confederated Tribes. Emeritus Farewell: Everyone is invited to the farewell ceremony for Emeritus, the 80-foot tall sculpture by John Grade, which will be moving to Alaska after 14 months at OSU. We’ll have hot chocolate, share writing inspired by the sculpture, learn about its next installation and then turn off the lights as we say goodbye. 5-6 p.m., Dec. 7, sequoia grove in the Memorial Union Quad.
OSU Theatre presents A Christmas Carol: A 1940s Radio Show by Thomas Nabhan. OSU Theatre will present, "A Christmas Carol: A 1940s Radio Show," a new twist on a beloved holiday classic by Thomas Nabhan. The production is directed by guest artist Tara Wibrew and features OSU students Dylan Danielson, Hannah Ford, Addison Hoppe, E.J. Hawai'i donation drive: The devastating fires in Lahaina in August resulted in the loss of life and property. OSU students, staff and community members who are from Maui and Hawai’i have been directly and indirectly impacted significantly. OSU Kokua Maui–Hui O Hawai’i is taking the lead along with other OSU entities to organize the collection and drop-offs, which take place from 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Dec. 4-8, at the Beth Ray Center. Donations requested include diapers, feminine care products, new children’s toys and gift cards.
Internationalization Grant: The Office of Global Engagement is pleased to announce the Internationalization Grant application cycle for 2023-24, opening Dec. 1 and closing Jan. 31. This year, the grant is offered in three tracks, aligned with Oregon State University’s new strategic plan “Prosperity Widely Shared,” focusing on research and innovation, global and intercultural learning and career and workforce development. Grant funds are provided through the INTO OSU Joint Venture Internationalization Fund. Full details are available on the website.
OSU Loyal Philanthropic Partner award: OSU President Emeritus Ed Ray has been chosen for the OSU Foundation’s 2023 OSU Loyal Philanthropic Partner Award, which honors faculty and staff who promote a culture of philanthropy at the university. “Throughout Ed’s 17-year tenure as president – and his ongoing involvement as a faculty member – he has been an extraordinary philanthropic leader,” said Larry Landis, a member of the OSU Loyal Advisory Committee that selected the award winner in this third annual tradition.

However, reports and statistical analysis of workplace violence document the low probability of injury or death due to violence. Still, being prepared and knowing how to respond to violence in the workplace is important in case it should occur. Mindful Self Compassion 10-week Program: Kate Gallagher will guide a 10-week mindful self compassion program starting Jan. 10 at the Marigold Center. MSC is an empirically supported method that improves mood, relationships and resilience and reduces harsh self-criticism. Call for Applications: Career Champions. Applications for the winter 2024 Career Champions program for teaching faculty and instructors are now being accepted. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Legacy Awards: Nominations are being accepted until Dec. 8. Each award comes with a $500 stipend as a token of appreciation and to celebrate the outstanding contributions of the recipients to make OSU more just and inclusive. Kerr parking lot: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr south parking lot closure has been extended until Jan. 8 to finish construction activities, including lighting installation, paving and striping. This includes the closure of the west sidewalk. ADA access is available on the east side of the building.

LaSells Stewart Center: As part of the LaSells Stewart Center Mechanical & Roof Renewal Project, a section of SW Stadium Avenue, located directly behind The LaSells Stewart Center and just south of Bloss Hall, will be closed to allow for crane activity from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Dec. 6. The entrance to SW Stadium Avenue from SW Western Boulevard will be closed. Both the east and west sidewalks on Stadium Avenue, directly behind The LaSells Stewart Center, will be closed. A vehicle detour will be available from Western Boulevard along the east and north side of the LaSells Stewart Center East parking lot. Stadium Avenue north of this area is closed under a separate notification for construction activity related to the Bloss Hall Renovation project. Stadium Avenue: As part of the Bloss Hall Renovation project, a section SW Stadium Avenue, located between CH2M Hill Alumni Center and Bloss Hall, will be closed from Wednesday, Nov. 29 through Friday, Jan. 5. Multiple parking spaces in the Bloss Hall West parking lot (bordering Stadium Ave.) will also be closed. In addition, the sidewalk on the west side of Bloss Hall will be closed.
