Agritourism adds to farmers' bottom lines (Capital Press)

“When you invite the public to your farm, you are making yourself more available to the public,” said Melissa Fery, Oregon State University Extension Service associate professor with the Small Farms Program. “You’re putting your farm out there sharing about your farm. All of this is done to sell more products.

Baby bats being born now need access to parents to survive first three months (WGCU)

Holly K. Ober, a former associate professor in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida who specializes in bats, is now with the Oregon State University College of Forestry. "During the summer, when pregnant and nursing female bats have especially high energy requirements, each bat may consume as much as two thirds of its body weight per night," she said. "This would be the equivalent of a 150-pound human consuming 100 pounds of food per day."

Multnomah County families can apply for free preschool this month (The Outlook)

Prior to the pandemic, only 42% of kids ages 3 to 5 in Multnomah County had access to a regulated child care slot, according to data from Oregon State University's Child Care Research Partnership. Access is far lower (20%) for kids 2 years old and younger, but Preschool for All won't cover that age group. Many other counties around the state had even less access.

We hear from listeners as well as Lauren Frank, associate professor of communication at Portland State University and Troy Hall, professor and head of the Forest Ecosystems and Society Department at Oregon State University.

Another successful OSU Food Drive (LIFE@OSU)

The Oregon State University Food Drive raised the equivalent of 447,393 meals in February, equating to 71 meals raised per university employee, the most of any participating public university in the state. (see also KTVZ

Benton has Oregon's lowest unemployment rate (Democrat-Herald)

Oregon State University weighs those numbers down, as workers with more education tend to hold on to jobs more commonly than workers with less education. More of the county’s workforce with more education probably means smaller and more stable unemployment rates.

How to tame bindweed, a frustrating invasive perennial (Oregonian)

Known as field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) or hedge bindweed (Convolvulus sepium), both are in the morning glory family and often confused with wild buckwheat and morning glory, which are summer annual plants that aren’t invasive. Bindweed species are native to Europe and now are distributed worldwide, according to Andy Hulting, an Oregon State University Extension weed specialist.
