Oregon State to lead $2M federal push toward more-efficient, longer-lasting electrical components (ScienMag)

Researchers in the Oregon State University College of Engineering are spearheading a $2 million federal effort to explore new ways of developing electrical components that are better able to withstand extreme operating conditions, especially high temperatures.

Flu shot clinic: OSU is hosting a flu shot clinic this fall for faculty, staff and students on the Corvallis campus on Oct. 17. Participants can sign up in the Fred Meyer portal by Oct. 12, end of day. FYI Friday – Food Insecurity on Campus: Food insecurity is a significant issue on college campuses impacting students’ physical and mental health as well as academic success. Food insecurity is three times more prevalent among college students compared to the general population. 25% of college students experience food insecurity compared with 11% of the general population. CTL QT Talks: Jaqueline Goldman, School of Psychological Science, will speak on “Academic Integrity and Equity: It’s in the Pedagogy..” Plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct have historically been conceptualized as the intentional and rational decision to cheat, however these assumptions neglect many underlying factors, both environmental and individual, that lead to students taking these shortcuts. FourSight Mindset Reveal Workshop: How do you approach a challenge? FourSight Mindset Reveal is a new workshop presented by the Office of University Human Resources that dives deep into the way that we solve problems together. Comment period open: An updated draft Forest Management Plan for the Elliott State Research Forest has been released and the public comment period is now open. Since early 2019, OSU and the Oregon Department of State Lands have been working collaboratively to explore transforming the Elliott State Forest into a publicly owned research forest. Review the draft plan and provide your comments; the public comment period is open until Friday, Oct. 27.

Sustainability conference: The Call For Speaker and Session Proposals for the Washington Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference is open until Oct. 13. WOHESC is March 4-6 at Western Washington University. The 2024 theme is "Learning From Place: Solutions Beyond Boundaries," which focuses on using the environment to ground inquiries that span politically drawn boundaries to be inclusive of place within a bioregion.

Traffic and Maintenance

Student Legacy Park: The Student Legacy Park fields and tennis courts have reopened, but other areas within the park will remain closed through Thursday, Oct. 12. The parking areas and sidewalk on SW Washington Way will remain closed through Oct. 12 along with the basketball courts. While the entry points to the park along Washington Way will remain closed, access to the park will be available from SW 26th Street, SW Intramural Lane and SW 30th Street. ADA parking spaces will be available on 30th Street, on 26th Street in front of Dixon Recreation Center and on Intramural Lane.

Washington Way: As part of the Washington Way Improvement project, Washington Way between 17th and 26th Streets will remain closed through Tuesday, Oct. 31. In addition to the road closure, the sidewalk on the north side of Washington Way between 17th and 26th Streets will be closed. Pedestrians may use the multi-use path on the south side of Washington Way as a detour.

Traffic change on SW 26th St. to improve safety: Southwest 26th St. stretching from SW Jefferson Way north to NW Orchard Avenue has been changed from two-way vehicle traffic to one-way, northbound traffic only. The street has been updated with new signage, designated north and south bicycle lanes and other street markings designed to clarify and enhance the pedestrian and bicyclist priority zone. This change supports a more safe and comfortable campus that prioritizes pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users and minimizes conflicts between vehicles and people, especially during class change times and implements a key recommendation in OSU’s Transportation Plan and the city’s Transportation System Plan.
