As Susanne Brander, an ecotoxicologist at Oregon State University, recently told the Associated Press, “My concern is we’re really focused on this one chemical but in the end, it’s the mixture. It’s many different chemicals that fish are being exposed to simultaneously that are concerning.”
The new map was calculated by the PRISM Climate Group at Oregon State University using climate and weather data from 1991-2020. Prior maps used data from 30-year periods before they were issued. The new map is based on GIS (Geographic Information System) data and allows gardeners to look at finer detail than earlier maps. (see also New Atlas, Oregonian, KEZI)

Oregon Sea Grant has appointed Tracy Crews of Yachats to a new position of associate director of education to oversee its K-12 marine education program, the Oregon Coast STEM Hub, and the public education wing of the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.

Commodities, Cafes and Climate Change: This week, OSU faculty leaders James Sterns and native French Dominique Bachelet from the College of Agriculture will tell you about their 4-credit, two-week (June 18-July 2, 2024) program in Lyon, the gastronomic capital of France, during two info sessions from 2:30-4 p.m., Nov. 15 and 16 in LInC 3446. Once there, you will be eating fabulous food, hiking in the mountains with a goat farmer, touring a nuclear power plant, visiting the UN in Geneva, discovering ancient cities and learning about how climate change challenges France's viticulture and agriculture ancient customs. Fulbright U.S. Student Program Information Session: National and Global Scholarships Advising invites undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni to learn more about the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for individuals to go abroad for one year to complete research, study or English teaching in a country of their choice. International Fellowships Mixer: All faculty are invited to attend an international fellowships mixer from 5-6 p.m., Nov. 16 in the Memorial Union (MU) Journey Room. The mixer will provide an opportunity to celebrate and learn from Humboldt Research Fellows and Fulbright Scholars. Global Community and Culinary Heritage Celebration: The OSU community is invited to sample cultural dishes prepared by international and domestic student teams while cultivating a greater appreciation of food as cultural heritage. American Strings: An Evening with Twanguero. Dubbed a “fire-breathing guitar hero” by the press, and called “the King of Twang” by Guitar Player Magazine, Latin Grammy-winning, guitarist/composer/performer Twanguero (Diego Garcia) is considered by many to be one of the finest guitarists in Spain. 7:30 p.m., Nov. 16 at The LaSells Stewart Center; tickets $25 or free for OSU students with advance registration.
NEW! Trans Day of Remembrance: A candle decorating event will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m., Nov. 20 at the Pride Center. A QTIBIPOC and First Gender Rose Ceremony will take place from 3-4 p.m. at Kaku-Ixt Mana Ina Haws with guest speaker Dharma Mirza. A vigil will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. in the SEC Plaza and after food will be provided in the Pride Center. Government to Government training workshop: This training, lead by Pam and Gordon James of the Skohomish and Colville tribes, is an overview of tribal governments and their relationship with federal, state and local governments. Search Advocate Program focus groups invitation: Members of the OSU community who have interacted with the OSU search advocate program in some way are invited to participate in facilitated Zoom focus groups evaluating the program. There are several sessions available for registration on this website for people who have had different roles in relation to search advocacy at OSU (search chairs, search administrators, hiring managers, search advocates, etc.). Upcoming sessions include one for search administrators and support staff from 9-10:30 a.m., Nov. 20; one for search committee members from 9:30-11 a.m., Nov. 27; and one for search advocates, 1-2:30 p.m., Nov. 27. Lyra Webinar: Coping With Distressing Current Events. While you can't fully control what happens in the world at large, you can determine how you respond to yourself and others in the aftermath of distressing news by prioritizing your well-being and taking productive action. In this workshop you will learn about research-supported tools to take care of yourself during difficult times, reduce in-the-moment distress and ensure that you know when support from a mental health professional is the right next step. NEW! Music Technology and Production (MTP) -- Call for Submissions: Calling all student songwriters and producers: MTP is looking for songwriters to produce. Selected artists will be paired with student producers to record and produce a song, which will be released on an album in 2024. Students are welcomed to submit a link to their demos by Dec. 1 to be considered for a spot on the album.

FYI Friday: Office of Human Resources Learning & Development is now accepting FYI Friday presentation proposals for Winter 2024. The OSU Libraries Survey: Oregon State University Libraries has contracted with Madison Avenue Collective, a local design firm, to help them update the Valley Library, Guin Library and OSU-Cascades Library websites. The first phase is to gather information about the current state of these sites. We're asking everyone in the OSU community to share their opinions anonymously. OSU community. Delays on SW 15th Street: As part of the Kerr South Parking Lot project, there will be intermittent delays on SW 15th Street between SW Washington Avenue and SW Adams Avenue due to construction activities from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16 and Friday, Nov. 17. A single lane will be closed at a time, with traffic being allowed to pass through the opposite lane. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic. A section of the sidewalk on the west side of 15th Street, just north of the work area, is closed under a previous notification along with the crosswalk at SW Adams Avenue. The east sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians. Other possible impacts include noise near the work site. View map.
EXTENDED! Campus Way Closure, 26th Street to Memorial Place: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Campus Way will be closed between SW 26th Street and SW Memorial Place from Nov. 6-27 to allow for crane activity.
Traffic diverted to temporary Van Buren bridge starting in mid-November: Commuters to campus may notice a traffic pattern change between downtown Corvallis and the east side of the Willamette River. Starting in mid-November, eastbound traffic will be diverted onto a temporary bridge on NW Van Buren Ave. The temporary bridge includes a separate path for pedestrians and bicyclists. The paths underneath the bridge will remain closed. A temporary signal at NW Van Buren Ave. and NW First Street will control traffic flow and NW First Street will change from two-way to one-way traffic for one block north and south of the Van Buren bridge. Access to NW Van Buren Avenue from NW First Street will be restricted. For more information, visit the ODOT Van Buren Bridge project page.
Kerr: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot closure has been extended until Dec. 4 to finish construction activities, including lighting installation, paving and striping. This includes the closure of the west sidewalk. ADA access is available on the east side of the building.
