“People are starting to see, hey, the school board makes a lot of decisions about the curriculum that our kids are learning about. And the city council has a huge impact on city regulations, as do county commissioners,” said Christopher Stout, a political science professor at Oregon State University. “People realize you can probably have more of an impact for less of an investment at the local level.”
It is not a nascent technology, but the importance of some of its applications is becoming more recognized, especially in the semiconductor industry, where the cooling of chips — with the explosive growth of such fields as artificial intelligence — has become a much larger problem than it was five years ago, according to Thomas Weller, head of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University.
Oregon State University has received $2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to study ways to keep organic potatoes from spoiling, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting’s KLCC. The Pacific Northwest has a $2.2 billion potato industry, and nationwide, organic food sales topped $60 billion in 2022 and the market continues to grow. OSU College of Agricultural Sciences researchers are tasked with figuring out how to prevent stored spuds from rotting without using chemicals.
Efforts to create a spray-on coating that protects wine grapes from wildfire smoke taint have been boosted by promising recent test results in the laboratory and on Pinot Noir vineyards, according to scientists at Oregon State University.

Ian Larson: "Flowers in the Grime of a Putrefied Utopia." This presentation of visceral bacchanalia and degenerative portraiture features glimpses into narratives, with a focus on the human figure existing in both fantasized and representational environments, centered around characters belonging to their own social contexts. This exhibition will run Feb. 15-March 22. There is a reception and artist talk from 4-6 p.m., Feb. 15.

Kondrat's repertoire includes Shubert, Schumann, Williams, Beethoven and Finzi. Pianist and accompanist Ana Maria Lupu began her artistic career in 2008 at the Lyceum of Music for Gifted Children in Chisinau, Moldova, where she took part in numerous competitions in her homeland. Core Curriculum for OSU Managers and Supervisors: The Core Curriculum for Managers and Supervisors is a training program for all Oregon State managers, supervisors and lead workers. At the end of this course, learners will have a solid understanding about the principles and policies that apply to our employees; know how to navigate within the space of talent management activities; and more. Interdisciplinary student opportunity: The one-year PRAx Student Fellowship offers graduate and advanced undergraduate students the opportunity to develop a creative or journalistic project connected with OSU research. Fellows will be awarded $1,000, engage in ongoing networking and professional development with mentors and present final projects in a public exhibition. Human-robot interaction: An evaluation is being conducted to understand good (and bad) ways for robot systems to pick up objects. Participants will be asked to watch videos of a robot system picking up various objects and complete questionnaires. The entire study procedure is expected to take one hour. Call for Submissions: Climate Stories in Action. The Spring Creek Project is partnering with Terrain.org on “Climate Stories in Action,” a new call for creative submissions to inspire collective action on climate change. We are inviting storytellers to submit narratives and art that center solutions, introduce us to everyday climate heroes and showcase the joy discovered through community engagement.
