An Oregon State University researcher who made color history in 2009 with a vivid blue pigment has developed durable, reddish magentas inspired by lunar mineralogy and ancient Egyptian chemistry.
The sea lion was humanely euthanized at Newport’s Port Dock One, after quality-of-life discussions between the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
The event is being co-hosted by Environment Oregon and Oregon State University which have prepared an expert panel of scientific experts, researchers and advocates who want to raise awareness for Heceta Bank and can answer any questions that arise during the film.
The Tour is put on by the Oregon State University (OSU) Extension Service to bring the kids back into hands on experiences. The annual spring tour began several decades ago in 1961, only stopping briefly during the COVID pandemic before picking back up. Last year, the tour saw over 700 students participate.

Film Screening of The Wonder and the Worry: Tickets on sale now for a sneak preview of “The Wonder and the Worry,” at 7 p.m., April 18 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. This documentary film traces the fragmentation and upheaval in photojournalism and its impact on the world’s most iconic publication: National Geographic magazine. The film delves into digital disruption and the power of environmental storytelling as it follows the intertwined careers of Chris Johns, OSU alumnus and former National Geographic editor, and his daughter Louise, a working freelance photographer. NEW! EPA Earth Day open house: The US Environmental Protection Agency office located on the OSU campus at 200 SW 35th St. will hold an Earth Day open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 22. There will be lab tours, poster presentations and a chance to meet with scientists. The OSU community is welcome.
NEW! Health Professions Fair: The Health Professions Fair connects students with admissions representatives from over 90 health professions schools and programs in Oregon and across the country. This free event will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., April 23 in the Dixon Recreation Center first floor gyms. Students from all majors, first year through seniors, are welcome. Pianist Aaron Diehl + The Aaron Diehl Trio: Tickets are on sale now to see virtuoso pianist Aaron Diehl and his ensemble perform at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 20 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. The concert will demonstrate the range of the new Steinway Concert Grand piano in PRAx. Prior to intermission, Diehl will play solo, classical piano. Happening soon! Slumberland VR Theatre: Experience “Slumberland,” a beautiful digital dream world at 2 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. April 22-May 11 in Ray Theater at PRAx. Bombina Bombast, an award-winning performing arts company from Sweden, is a pioneer in the field of "live virtual reality." In this 45-minute, participatory VR experience, audience members wear a virtual reality headset, interacting with one another and with an actor (who is also in the physical theater) wearing a motion-capture suit. Take Back the Night: Take Back the Night is an internationally recognized event held to protest sexual violence in all its forms and to provide a safe, confidential space for survivors of sexual violence to share their stories. This year's Take Back the Night at OSU will be held from 7-10 p.m., April 25 in the SEC Plaza and will feature a rally with keynote speakers and student performers, a march and a survivor speakout. There will be an exception made to OSU's responsible employee reporting requirements for this event regarding any disclosures of sexual assault. Confidential CAPS counselors and survivor advocates from CAPE and CARDV will be on site to provide support and connection to resources.
PRAx Presents Live Wire Radio: Live Wire with Luke Burbank and special guests Hanif Abdurraqib, Naomi Fitter and Jon the Robot, Brittany Davis and Y La Bamba at 7 p.m. April 26 in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Celebrating its 20th year, Live Wire Radio is an independently produced radio show based in Portland. Hosted by Luke Burbank and announced by Elena Passarello, the show artfully blends unpredictable conversation, live music and original comedy featuring all kinds of cultural talent and creative minds, from emerging artists to established acts. PRAx presents Las Cafeteras: Enjoy the electric sound and energy of Las Cafeteras on April 28 at 7 p.m. in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone), and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sing in English, Spanish, and Spanglish and add a remix of sounds, from rock to hip-hop to rancheras. Las Cafeteras play music as a vehicle to build bridges among different cultures and communities, creating “a world where many worlds fit.” Their Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms, and rhymes deliver inspiring lyrics that document stories of a community seeking love and justice in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. Four-time GRAMMY winners Eighth Blackbird: PRAx Presents Eighth Blackbird and the OSU Wind Ensemble on May 2 at 7 p.m. in Detrick Hall at PRAx. Eighth Blackbird sextet has been hailed as “one of the smartest, most dynamic ensembles on the planet” by the Chicago Tribune. These pioneers in creative contemporary music are the founders of the Eighth Blackbird Creative Lab and the Chicago Artists Workshop. PRAx and the Office of the Provost present Okaidja Afroso: Experience Okaidja Afroso on May 4 at 7 p.m. in Detrick Hall at PRAx. In “Jaku Mumor,” multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and dancer Okaidja Afroso dives into his cultural roots by collaborating with Indigenous Ga-Dangme fishermen to share the artistry of their a cappella singing and chants in his music and via film. A moving tribute to the fishermen of Ghana in their fierce determination to survive the impact of evolving fishing practices on traditional cultures, the program joins musical and visual elements to produce an unforgettable experience that is at once aesthetic, cultural, and environmental. OSU Extension to offer calving school: The OSU Extension Service will host two calving schools in Corvallis this year,1:30-5 p.m. April 19 and 1:30-5 p.m. April 22. These classes are designed for ranchers or farm workers who are new to calving. Topics will include nutritional and management strategies, calving facilities, the calving process, newborn calf care and dystocia, along with a hands-on activity. 2024 CEOAS Earth Day Lecture: Bold Solutions, Better Planet. Three alums from the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences will challenge the notion that disasters are "natural” and address how deeply divided societies understand, prepare for and cope with environmental change and disasters. ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training): ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop; anyone 18 or older can learn and use the ASIST model. NEW! Duo Passcodes: Upcoming Retirement. Passcodes for Duo authentication will retire on May 8. Passcodes are six-digit codes that are usually generated by a hardware token and can also be obtained through the Duo Mobile app. If you are using Verified Duo Push, this change will not affect you. Verified Duo Push sends a 3-digit code to your phone and is currently used by most of the OSU community. Learn more by visiting: beav.es/duo-passcode.
Mid-Month Emergency Preparedness Topic: Fire. Arson is the second leading cause of campus fires following cooking. Over half of campus arson fires are in on-campus residential buildings and most of these are set in hallways or corridors. Campus arson often starts as a prank but pranks can turn deadly, as all big fires start small. Fulbright: The 2025-26 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program competition is now open. This program offers U.S. citizens opportunities to teach, conduct research and carry out professional projects in over 135 countries. IT awards: The IT Recognition Committee welcomes nominations for the 2024 OSU IT Annual Awards acknowledging the dedication and commitment of OSU IT community members in one of six areas. Information on the nomination process and descriptions of each award can be found on the IT RecognitionCommittee website. All current OSU IT employees (central and college/unit IT) are eligible for nomination. Nominations may be submitted by current OSU employees and must be received by the nomination deadline, April 19.
DPO Teaching Award: To recognize excellence in Difference, Power, and Oppression (DPO) teaching, we invite nominations for the newly established DPO Teaching Award. Awardees will receive up to $1,000 as part of their recognition. Nominees must have taught at least one DPD/DPO course within the last two years and been instructors or faculty of record. Taste Sensitivity Study: We are looking for participants for a research study examining how hunger state influences taste sensitivities to carbohydrates.
