COVID testing: Oregon State University, in collaboration with Willamette Valley Toxicology, is providing on-site COVID-19 testing. Vaccine compliance: Effective Sept. 15, Oregon State University requires employees and students who work, learn or engage with others in-person as part of their job duties to be fully vaccinated from COVID-19. OSU employees and students who are required to comply and who meet an exemption not to be vaccinated, will be required to test for COVID-19 weekly until further notice.

A new Oregon State University study is looking at the reasons for vaccine hesitancy in the Latino community. The study found that a lack of trusted medical resources, traumatic past experiences with medical care and widespread misinformation have contributed to vaccine hesitancy in this community. “It seems extremely likely to me that (the last special legislative session) indicates heightened tensions, polarization and likely more extreme maneuvers — particularly from Republicans — in the state Legislature in the next year,” said Christopher McKnight Nichols, an associate professor of history at Oregon State University. A new Oregon State University study on foot-and-mouth disease among buffalo in South Africa could help explain how certain extremely contagious pathogens are able to persist and reach endemic stage in a population, long after they’ve burned through their initial pool of susceptible hosts.
It's happening already. This summer's heatwave in the Pacific Northwest brought temperatures of over 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 Celsius) to Oregon, and that led to a condition called "foliage scorch," in which leaves prematurely browned, said Chris Still, a professor at the Forest Ecosystems and Society department at Oregon State University.
A study from Oregon State University on aging found that how people thought about themselves at age 50 predicted a wide range of future health outcomes up to 40 years later—cardiovascular events, memory, balance, will to live, hospitalizations, and even mortality.

October Flu Shot Clinics: Flu shot clinics are scheduled for OSU faculty, staff and students this October at various locations. The Flu Shot Clinic Sign-up portal is now open and working for the Corvallis flu shot clinic at the MU Ballroom. Detailed instructions are located on the HR Website here. Beginning Oct. 5, employees can sign up for the Oct. 19 clinic at: www.krogerhealth.com/partnerscheduling. You must enter your insurance information in the portal. It will state it is optional but for OSU employees it is not optional. If you do not provide this your appointment time may be delayed. The last day to schedule for Oct. 19 is Oct. 13. In Newport, OSU employees in the Newport area can access a flu shot clinic on Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon at Hatfield Marine Science Center. NEW! Processing emotions: Two optional EAP sessions are scheduled for employees who wish to process the emotions related to resumption and the pandemic as a group. This will be facilitated by Fabiola Ruiz, a provider with OSU’s EAP Beyond Benefits. It will not be a space where OSU will be taking suggestions on re-opening, discussing the Pathway to Fall, etc., but a space for employees to process feelings and emotions related to the pandemic’s impact and the current transitions. The events take place Oct. 5, noon and Oct. 12, noon. Registration is required because the sessions are limited to 30 employees per a session by the EAP and it guarantees you a spot. If the sessions fill up we will schedule additional sessions. Employees who are seeking tools and coping strategies may find individual sessions with an EAP counselor more beneficial than these group processing sessions. No Such Thing as Perfect Parent: Today’s diverse society makes it difficult to describe a typical family situation or define what characteristics make a “perfect parent.” Culture, values, beliefs, emotional disposition and the environment in which a person was raised all influence parenting techniques. In an effort to be perfect, new parents will frequently try too hard to protect their child from any adverse experiences or go to great lengths in an attempt to please their children. This type of well-intended “perfect parenting” can lead to unanticipated problems. Monthly Emergency Preparedness Topic: Earthquake. Experts predict that the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake will occur within our lifetime. The projected magnitude is 9.0, with shaking lasting for 5-7 minutes. The Oregon coast will also experience a tsunami (30-40 foot wave) that follows the earthquake. ID Center realignment: The OSU ID Center, previously in the Controller’s Unit, is now part of OSU’s Department of Public Safety. This transition aligns with the university’s Community Wellness, Education & Safety Network shared goals to support students and employees and advance public safety. Part-time Faculty Benefits: New this fall, related to SB 551, actively working part-time faculty working at least half-time at a single public institution of higher education or in aggregate at multiple public institutions of higher education in Oregon (Public Community College or University) during at least three of the four previous academic terms may be eligible for employee only, medical only insurance coverage. Harrison Blvd resurfacing: As part of the 2021-22 Street Resurfacing Project along NW Harrison Boulevard, changes to access on NW Harrison Boulevard will remain in effect as follows: Oct. 1-12, Harrison Boulevard daytime closure, open overnight (Circle to 29th), and open on the weekends. The existing detour that utilizes 29th, and Grant will be expanded to include Witham and Circle. Detours will be signed. 35th Street at Harrison Boulevard will be closed during the daytime to allow the grinding and paving to occur. A traffic detour for the closure of 35th Street at Harrison will be Western to 15th to Harrison. This project is managed by the city of Corvallis.
