“A blue whale that comes ashore as a whole is not all that rare,” said Lisa Ballance, director of Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute. “But if it comes ashore close enough to a facility that has the capability of doing this kind of project, that is a rare thing. What is special about a blue whale is that blue whales are the largest of the whales, the largest animals to have ever lived on the planet. Larger even than the largest dinosaur. It is an awesome thing to behold.”

"[The Cascadia Subduction Zone] is a big fault that is a plate boundary between the North American plate between where we reside and the Juan de Fuca Plate, which is off shore underneath the Pacific Ocean," said Oregon State University earthquake geology professor Andrew Meigs. "The Cascadia Subduction Zone is the monster in the room that's last had an earthquake in the 1700's." (see also KGW)
Researchers looking for ways to manage wildfires before they start used the collars on 39 cows on Oregon State University’s experimental pasture in southeastern Oregon. The state has been plagued by wildfires in recent years, fueled in part by sagebrush habitats that burn and subsequently are invaded by nonnative grasses that outcompete native species, dry quickly and provide even more tinder for future fires.
At the heart of the findings, by researchers at the University of Arkansas, the University of Alabama, and Oregon State University, is the concept of "problematic social comparison." In layman's terms, that's the crappy feeling you get when you look at other people's glamorous lives and feel like yours isn't living up.
