Oregon State University President Jayathi Murthy has set a goal of achieving a 100% graduation rate. On Friday, OSU held a investiture ceremony to formally recognize Murthy, who has served as president since September of last year. (see also KEZI)
According to Cody Copp, assistant professor of horticulture at Oregon State University, Oregon wine enthusiasts can still expect many of their current favorites to be produced in the next few years. Although wineries must combat new problems like increased wildfire risk, consumer desire remains the primary reason for varietal choice. “You may see a lot of adjustments to how Oregon wines are grown. Wineries and vineyards are experimenting so they can remain resilient,” said Copp.
An Oregon State University study has found climate change has led to an $11 billion decrease in the value of privately-owned West Coast forests over the last 20 years.
The latest analysis of imagery from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1 satellite shows a steady increase in the number of buildings destroyed in middle and southern Gaza. Since the beginning of the conflict, over 10,000 buildings are likely to have been damaged or destroyed by airstrikes in these areas, according to analysis by Corey Scher of New York's CUNY Graduate Center and Jamon Van Den Hoek of Oregon State University.
"It gives us the ability to take what used to only be possible to do in concrete and steel, i.e larger buildings, not single family homes but multi-family residences, institutional buildings, office buildings, commercial buildings, hotels," said Iain Macdonald, the director of the Tallwood Institue, a collaborative effort between the Oregon State University, and the University of Oregon to advance the understanding, and application of mass timber. "All of those things can be done now using wood."

Kurt Williams, director of the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Oregon State University, is quoted as telling the Associated Press that “dogs have died,” but said that it’s hard to count how many died from a severe form of the infection without any clear way to define the disease or test for it yet.

Search Advocate Program focus groups invitation: Members of the OSU community who have interacted with the OSU search advocate program in some way are invited to participate in facilitated Zoom focus groups evaluating the program. There are several sessions available for registration on this website for people who have had different roles in relation to search advocacy at OSU (search chairs, search administrators, hiring managers, search advocates, etc.). Upcoming sessions include one for search administrators and support staff from 9-10:30 a.m., Nov. 20; one for search committee members from 9:30-11 a.m., Nov. 27; and one for search advocates, 1-2:30 p.m., Nov. 27. NEW! Mental Health 101: We all have mental health — it’s shaped by our emotional, psychological and social well-being. Our mental health impacts how we think, feel and behave, but many of us don’t notice the impact it has on our lives and miss opportunities to get or give support when it’s needed. Others may be reluctant to talk about or seek support for mental health because of stigma. That’s where this workshop comes in — it covers what mental health is, why it matters and how understanding mental health and reducing stigma are key to supporting our mental well-being at work and at home. 10-11 a.m., Nov. 20. Live, Learn, Work and Play: The Social Determinants of Health in London. Join OSU faculty leader Stephanie Grutzmacher and Ashley Vaughn from the College of Health from the College of Health to learn more about a 4-credit, two-week program in London studying the social determinants and disparities of health in one of the world’s most diverse and unequal cities from June 30-July 16, 2024. Save the date: Bobbin' Through the Woods Art and Craft Fair. The holiday craft and art fair is returning to the Peavy Forest Science Center. 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Dec. 8 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Dec. 9. This year we have even more vendors, but the mission remains the same. All proceeds support Rootstock, our College of Forestry food pantry, and our food insecure students.

The goal of OSU’s Hearing Conservation Program is to monitor and protect employees who have the potential to develop noise-induced hearing loss – a preventable, permanent and progressive health issue. In collaboration with Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health Services provides annual hearing tests for those exposed to loud noise on the job. Music Technology and Production (MTP) -- Call for Submissions: Calling all student songwriters and producers: MTP is looking for songwriters to produce. Selected artists will be paired with student producers to record and produce a song, which will be released on an album in 2024. The OSU Libraries Survey: Oregon State University Libraries has contracted with Madison Avenue Collective, a local design firm, to help them update the Valley Library, Guin Library and OSU-Cascades Library websites. Kerr: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot closure has been extended until Dec. 4 to finish construction activities, including lighting installation, paving and striping. Kim Bernard: Kim Bernard leads the Zooplankton Ecology Lab at OSU, studying how climate change and other anthropogenic disturbances alter zooplankton ecology at the individual, population and community levels and thus the structure and function of marine ecosystems and services.
