Omicron subvariant is in Oregon, but a surge is not necessarily on the horizon (Oregonian)

The omicron subvariant fueling COVID-19 surges in Europe has been found in the wastewater of at least four Oregon communities, according to Oregon State University analyses of wastewater collected as part of a statewide early warning system. (see also KGW)
 

For Oregonians who've never had COVID, is a bout with the virus inevitable? (Portland Monthly)

That could shift, though, if and when the BA.2 subvariant makes its way to the state. Surveillance of sewer waste, a reliable indicator throughout the course of the pandemic, is already showing a noticeable uptick in the presence of BA.2 on the East Coast. The Oregon Health Authority’s wastewater data has not been recently updated, but wastewater surveillance efforts coordinated by Oregon State University have shown a recent bump in COVID levels in the Portland metro area and the Willamette Valley.

Plants bought at nurseries should have the hardiness zone on the label.
 

Federal dollars will help make Portland International Airport runway earthquake-ready (KGW)

A team of Oregon State University researchers set off a series of controlled underground explosions near the airport last year to simulate the type of seismic waves that can cause liquefaction, and the experiment confirmed that the runways would not survive a major earthquake without reinforcement.

Researchers at Oregon State University and the University of Idaho have begun to study the impact that wildfires have on cattle. Juliana Ranches and Jenifer Cruickshank are assistant professors at Oregon State University who have started a three year study on the effects of wildfires on dairy cattle and their milk production. Ranches and Cruickshank believe that if wildfires are going to keep happening, we better figure out what sort of effect it has on the food system.

How the Hoopa Valley tribe monitors a rare carnivore (Undark)

“They need these big trees, particularly to get up off the forest floor to escape predators, to consume prey,” explained Sean Matthews, who worked with the Hoopa Valley Tribe from 2004 to 2008 and continues to study fishers at Oregon State University. On sunny yet cold winter days, Matthews said, fishers also use the trees to stay warm. “You’ll see them sprawled out on a limb somewhere, just sunbathing.”

Behind the scenes at Hatfield (News Times)

The Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) will host the annual Marine Science Day on Saturday, April 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Like last year, this event will be a free virtual event open to the public. Sea Grant educators will be on hand to highlight many different sea animals, such as sea anemones, tidepool sculpins and sea cucumbers.

A 2022 wildfire risk assessment for landscape-scale, cross-boundary projects: The College of Forestry Extension Fire Program sponsored this project for use by local multi-agency/entity Partnerships needing to determine areas to place efforts for education, outreach, grant applications, potential funding and eventual project implementation. Designed to incorporate local information on fire behavior and values at risk, this effort is a foundational piece of information to assist in determining specific areas at highest risk to the hazard of fire. Bi-Mart Autopay Program: Effective April 1, OSU’s Autopay agreement with Bi-Mart will end. As a result of this change, OSU employees will no longer be able to direct bill purchases from Bi-Mart to a department index. Bi-Mart has indicated they will not be entering into direct bill agreements with individual OSU departments. Starting in April, it is recommend to use a University Credit Card to make purchases from Bi-Mart. If needed, please reach out to the Travel & Expense Office if you need assistance obtaining a university card. Dogs sought for fiber study: The OSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital is seeking dogs that have a history of chronic diarrhea for a research study examining the effect of fiber on the fecal microbiome and gut health. Participation in this study involves mixing a powder supplement on the dog food daily for four weeks, three visits to the hospital and a $50 Amazon gift card. Crossroads Conversation School for Women welcomes international women to join us for spring term English conversation classes beginning on March 29. In volunteer-taught classes, students will explore other cultures, practice English and develop friendships. Call for Art: Submission Deadline April 22. The Truckenbrod Gallery at 517 SW 2nd St. in Corvallis is a contemporary art gallery managed by Joan Truckenbrod, digital media artist and professor emeritus from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She will make selections for an exhibition in her gallery from artworks in the Snell and Gladys Valley studios on Friday, April 22. Traffic and Maintenance 

NEW! Drilling: As part of the Withycombe Hall Renovation Project, geotechnical drilling is scheduled to occur on the north and south sides of the west wing of Withycombe Hall March 28-29. This work will create noise and will require closures outside the building. On March 28 the southwest entrance of Withycombe will be closed, along with a portion of the sidewalk on 30th Street, and a portion of the westbound lane of Campus Way. On March 29, the northern entrance will be impacted, with partial obstruction at the entry and closure of the sidewalk along the building from 30th Street and the fire lane (view map).
