Inara Scott, senior associate dean for Oregon State University’s College of Business, noted the concerns with using custom AI tools while keeping data private, saying “I don’t know enough about [ChatGPT Edu] yet to say whether it will be [safer]. It sounds like that’s the intention of it, which is great and something we would look into further.”
“It’s a group that we’re always trying to reach,” said Cynthia Mojica, a cancer researcher at Oregon State University who did not work on the study. In that sense, the study demonstrated how AI might be a tool that could improve engagement with vulnerable communities for cancer prevention — and possibly help close some of the health disparities between low-income communities and communities of color.
There’s a new resident giant Pacific octopus at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. The cephalopod is there thanks to a local crab boat.

Kari Bisbee O’Connell, associate director of the STEM Research Center at Oregon State University, has been given the Eugene P. Odum Award for Excellence in Ecology Education. The Ecological Society of America announced the winners of its 2024 awards on May 30.

Gaza Protests at UO: Lessons about What Worked. Cheyney Ryan was one of the faculty members that helped negotiate between the administration and the protest encampment at the University of Oregon, allowing the encampment to disband after it had won significant demands. He will discuss what efforts worked to end the protest peacefully and what work remains ahead for the student movement there. Noon to 1 p.m., June 3, in Milam 319. Virtual lecture: Trauma-Informed Care in Education: Join Beth Rankin of the College of Education for a look at how her research is helping teachers understand and work with K-12 students who have experienced trauma. The goals of Dr. Rankin's research are to determine how effective classes have been in preparing pre-service teachers to work with students who have experienced trauma. NEW! Educational Talk by Holocaust Survivor Ben Midler: Ben Midler, now 96 years old, spent his teenage years enduring six Nazi camps, including Auschwitz. He is also the last living survivor of the Bialystok ghetto. Midler will share his experiences with OSU students and community members via Zoom at 6 p.m., June 5. A Q&A session will follow his talk. This event is made possible by the Oregon State University Holocaust Memorial Committee.

McDonald-Dunn Research Forest Community Input Session: The College of Forestry invites you to the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest Community Input Session from 6-8 p.m., June 5 in PFSC 117. Remote participation available via Zoom. A new plan is being developed to guide management of the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest. After nearly two years of work, we have developed a suite of “management strategies” that will serve as the foundation for forest management. We now need to make decisions on how these strategies will be overlaid across the forest. At this session, we will provide an overview of decisions made to date and request your input on how we allocate land within the forest. OSU ID Card update – action needed by June 30: The OSU Key Shop and the ID Center are collaborating on a project to update the building access control system and ensure that all students, faculty and staff obtain an Orange ID card. An Orange ID has a bright orange border on the front of the card and says “Orange Card” on the bottom edge. This project will impact users who received their current cards BEFORE July 2019 and did not obtain an Orange ID. If you received your current ID card after this date, no action is needed. Campus Way: As part of the Kelley District Utility Plant project, SW Campus Way between SW 26th Street and SW Memorial Place will be closed May 29-June 10. The closure is necessary to allow for crane activity related to the project. Unlike recent, intermittent closures related to the project, this will be a continuous closure of Campus Way. The Kelley Engineering Center south entrance will also be closed. The north sidewalk and both bicycle lanes in this section of Campus Way will be closed during this time period.
