According to Dr. William Hanshumaker of Oregon State University, sea foam can happen more in winter due to more local waves crashing, which stirs up the sea foam. “When I say stirs up the sea foam I mean what creates the sea foam,” Hanshumaker adds. He says local weather is a main factor in sea foam formation.

The narrative for this exhibit is to acquaint Oregonians with the native beauty of Afghanistan and the universal humanity of its people, and to impart a sense of what life there was like when the country was at peace half a century ago. Nostalgia: A solo exhibition by Iván Carmona. Iván Carmona’s ceramic work exists in a long lineage of abstracted, modernist sculpture that taps into a deep well or nostalgia and indirect association. Inspired by Puerto Rican landscapes, Carmona sifts his own intimate memories through distinct shapes, colors and textures to give physicality to the immaterial. Carmona’s work will be on display from Jan. 8 to Feb. 8 in Fairbanks Hall. An opening reception and artist talk will occur from 4-7 p.m., Jan. 9.

Mindful Self Compassion 10-week Program: Kate Gallagher will guide a 10-week mindful self compassion program starting Jan. 10 at the Marigold Center. MSC is an empirically supported method that improves mood, relationships, resilience and reduces harsh self-criticism. Registration is open and the cost is $400 for educators; $450 for the public. Onboarding forums held via Zoom: The President and Provost’s Leadership Council for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (PPLC) is hosting another onboarding forum via Zoom for employees of color on Friday, Jan. 12. We are seeking to identify additional ways to support the success and belonging of new employees of color. The forum is from 9-10 a.m. on Jan. 12 and registration is required. Suicide prevention training in Portland: Become a certified "Question, Persuade, Refer Gatekeeper" this Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. OSU-Cascades Science Pub: Oregon State University – Cascades’ Science Pub series continues on Jan. 16 with “The Roller Coaster of Hemp in Oregon,” a talk on the history of the hemp industry in Oregon from its legalization in 2018 to today. Presenter Gordon Jones is an agronomist with the OSU Extension Service. The Science Pub will take place from 5:30-7:15 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall at OSU-Cascades. NEW! Update on the Washington Way Improvement Project: SW Washington Way between SW 17th and SW 26th streets will be reopening for all motor vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic on Monday, Jan. 8. Washington Way will remain closed between 26th and 30th Streets.
NEW! Cycle Track Opening: A two-way, dedicated cycle track will be constructed on Washington Way between 15th and 35th Streets. The cycle track section between 17th and 26th Streets will be opening on Monday, Jan. 8. Because the cycle track between 15th and 17th Streets is not yet complete, temporary pavement markings will direct cyclists traveling eastbound to exit the cycle track at SW Benton Place and cross traffic to rejoin the existing bicycle lane. NEW! 15th Street: As part of the Kerr South Parking Lot project, there will be a lane closure on SW 15th Street, just south of the Kerr Administration Building, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Jan. 8. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic through the area. Other possible impacts include noise near the work site.
Ben Butler Ingrained: Completed in 2023, the expansion of the west side of Reser Stadium at Oregon State University features a monumental wood sculpture, “Ingrained,” by Tennessee and New York-based artist Ben Butler. Acquired through the Percent for Art/Art in Public Places program of the Oregon Arts Commission, the sculpture’s story involves Oregon history, contemporary wood technology, sustainability and the significance of its placement adjacent to the new OSU Welcome Center.
