Oregon State University, OR – To develop a set of interventions that includes tailored toolkits and resources that can be used by schools, preschools and day cares to reduce wildfire smoke exposures and increase community resilience across Oregon.

Breakthrough in computer chip energy efficiency could cut data center electricity use (OSU).
“We were making great progress in reducing food insecurity until the pandemic hit and progress reversed somewhat and is likely continuing this sort of unhealthy upward trend,” Mark Edwards, a professor at Oregon State University who studies food insecurity, said at a news conference last week.
“It's a great way to connect with kids across the community,” said Elizabeth Gangwer, Lane County 4-H’s program coordinator. “Another amazing thing about this program is we partner with a wide variety of community partners that come in and help teach some of the sessions.”
The Grow This! Oregon Garden Challenge, Oregon State University Extension’s statewide seed giveaway, has returned for a fifth year in 2024, featuring a continued partnership with the Oregon Bee Project.

Trauma-Informed Yoga Class from CAPE: Beginning Jan. 22, CAPE Survivor Advocacy will be hosting a free trauma-informed yoga class for students who are survivors of gender-based violence. This class is led at a gentle to medium pace. All bodies and levels of movement are welcome and modifications will be offered. Limited yoga mats are available – please bring your own mat if possible. NEW! Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar: Emily Yeh (University of CO Boulder) will discuss some of the multidimensional impacts climate change is having on the Tibetan Plateau. Advances in Battery Research 2024: The College of Science’s David Ji, who researches sustainable battery technologies, will present Feb. 21 at the online symposium Advances in Battery Research 2024 organized by Technology Networks. Ji’s presentation is titled “Opportunities and challenges of aqueous metal batteries” and will encompass the large picture of energy storage, the requirements of storage batteries and results from the Ji lab regarding fundamental solutions in enabling aqueous metal batteries for storage purposes. EXTENDED! Internationalization Grant: The deadline for the 2023-24 Internationalization Grant has been extended to 5 p.m. Feb. 16. Grants of up to $5,000 are offered for projects that advance internationalization within one of three tracks, aligned with “Prosperity Widely Shared”: Research and Innovation; Global and Intercultural Learning; and Career and Workforce Development. Male study participants needed: Researchers in the College of Health at OSU are studying the effects of an FDA-approved drug on people at risk for high blood sugar. We are looking for male study participants between the age of 18-59, who are non-smokers and do not have diabetes. The study involves several visits to the Samaritan Athletic Medicine Center in Corvallis over approximately four months. Student Veteran of the Year: Angelina Trillo, a senior in political science at Oregon State University from Portland, has been named 2023 Student Veteran of the Year by the Student Veterans of America. The announcement was made Jan. 16. As president of OSU’s Student Veterans Association and an Army Reserve medic for her unit, she has been praised by supervisors as vital to the university’s veteran affairs operations and is a key member of staff.
