One of the best-known strategies to prevent dune erosion is to introduce plants whose roots will help hold sand in place and stabilize the dune. But experiments conducted at Oregon State University show that may not always be the case. Researchers found that newly planted vegetation can actually accelerate erosion in the face of extreme storms. Meagan Wengrove is an assistant professor of civil and construction engineering at OSU. She was involved in the experiments and joins us to talk about what the findings could mean for coastal management.
Sabrina Sommer is the equity specialist for the David Douglas School District. Eric Staab is the vice president of Admissions and Financial Aid at Lewis & Clark College. And Scott Vignos is the vice president and chief diversity officer at Oregon State University. They all join us now to share what these decisions will mean for Oregon students and the impacts they believe it could have on Oregon colleges and universities.
These microparticles and microplastics have been on the rise in the Pacific Ocean in the last several decades, according to the researchers from the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute, who published their findings in June in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science.
“We’re not trying to do this in a vacuum,” said Christopher Dunn, a researcher at Oregon State University who led the mapping team. State law will require eight public meetings for the next round of mapmaking, though Dunn said “we need a lot more.”
Each of Oregon’s seven public universities increased tuition costs this year, according to data collected by the state’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission. Any university that wishes to raise its core tuition and fees by more than 5% must get approval from the commission, however, and none sought it.

Academic researchers trap, kill, and take blood and tissue samples from wild animals in the hopes of gathering new and useful information about how to conserve these creatures. “Conservation can be pretty callous at times,” said Michael Nelson, an environmental ethicist at Oregon State University.
Research by Oregon State University, which tracked tree growth in the Coast Range and Cascades, showed that tree growth slows or stops in hot weather, and that growth has slowed in all four conifer species studied (western hemlock, western red-cedar, Douglas fir and ponderosa pine) due to higher temperatures and longer dry periods in the summer months.

Andrew Ross, a cereal chemist and professor of crop and soil science at Oregon State University, gave me the lowdown on why: “All starchy foods will feel tender to the bite while hot, but can become firmer when cold. It is starch recrystallization, or retrogradation. The starch molecules start to bond together as the food cools, creating a stronger matrix.”
Carlson officially retired on June 30 after a 54-year career at Oregon State University — starting as a violin teacher and ending as music director of the Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra.
Lead Stories spoke with Alexander Michels, a research associate with expertise in the health benefits of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and other dietary compounds at Oregon State University's health research Linus Pauling Insitute. Michels said that it is "absolutely false" that all diseases originate from mineral deficiencies, noting that the origination of similar claims has been falsely attributed to chemist Linus Pauling.

Human-robot interaction: The Human-Machine Teaming Laboratory in Oregon State University’s Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute is conducting a research experiment to study human-robot interaction for peer-based environments. Participants will be trained as first responders and complete a series of disaster-response tasks with a robot teammate and will complete anonymous questionnaires. The experiment requires participants to complete two separate two-hour sessions. Participants who complete the entire evaluation will receive $60. LaSells: As part of The LaSells Stewart Center Mechanical & Roof Renewal Project, a section of SW Stadium Avenue located directly behind LaSells Stewart Center and just south of Bloss Hall will be closed to allow for crane activity from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m., July 11. The B2 parking lot east of the LaSells Stewart Center will also be closed. The entrance to SW Stadium Avenue from SW Western Boulevard will be closed. Both the east and west sidewalks on Stadium Avenue directly behind the LaSells Stewart Center will be closed. NEW! MU Quad: As part of the Memorial Union Quad Concrete Repair project, multiple concrete walkways on the west side of the MU Quad area will have limited pedestrian access from July 10-July 14. The impacted walkways are the interior paths that extend from the western half of the quad into the center. Pedestrians may continue to use the perimeter walkways for east-west travel.
NEW! Kerr entrance: As part of the Kerr South Parking lot project, the east entrance of the Kerr Administration Building will be closed from Monday, July 10-Friday, July 14. The south entrance and ADA ramp may be accessed via the west side walkway around the back of the building. The current closure impacting the western sidewalk on SW 15th Street (east of the building) will be extended through Friday, July 14.
Campus Way: As part of the Withycombe Hall Renovation project, the north sidewalk on SW Campus Way between the East Greenhouses and SW 30th Street will be closed to pedestrian traffic June 30-Aug. 31. Pedestrians may detour across Campus Way at the crosswalk located directly in front of the East Greenhouses or at the intersection with 30th Street and use the south sidewalk.
Kerr south parking lot: As part of the Kerr Administration South Parking Lot Improvement project, the Kerr South parking lot will be closed for construction activities from June 26-Sept. 27. The path running along the west side of the Kerr Administration Building will be closed along with the south entrance/exit to the parking lot and the ADA ramp. Other possible impacts include noise, dust and mud near the construction site.
Madison Avenue: As part of the Upper Division & Graduate Student Housing project, the roadway and sidewalk median on SW Madison Avenue between SW Ninth and SW 11th Streets will be closed through July 3. The sidewalks on the north side of Madison Avenue and the east side of 11th Street will remain closed through Dec. 31. The sidewalk on the south side Madison will remain open. In addition, several city parking spaces along the west side of SW 11th Street near the intersection with NW Monroe Avenue will be closed through Dec. 31 to allow for construction activities. Student Legacy Park: Student Legacy Park, including all fields, tennis facilities, basketball court and sand volleyball courts will be closed for resurfacing and turf replacement starting on Monday, June 19 and continuing through the summer.
