Marta Maldonado started with $100,000 in student loans for her graduate studies. After 16 years of chipping away at that debt, she still had a staggering $91,000 left to pay. “I figured I would be paying this debt until the end of my life,” the associate professor of ethnic studies at Oregon State University said in an interview. “It’s like a life sentence.”
Officials at Oregon State University said they recognize the problem and want to ensure campus is a place where students can seek help. "If students and staff are not safe, then we're not able to do our education," said Steve Clark, Vice President of University Relations.
A new study out of Oregon State University shows leaves in forest canopies may not be as resistant to climate change as once thought. OSU Professor Christopher Still used thermal cameras mounted in forests around the country and in Panama. His research shows canopy leaves warm faster than the air, impacting their ability to perform photosynthesis.

WIC Workshop: Peer response can be a valuable supplement to instructor feedback on writing. It’s Time to Paw-ty! Cedar, the OSU Department of Public Safety wellness dog, is turning 2 years old. Cedar’s birthday paw-ty takes place from 2-4 p.m. on Oct. 10 in Cascade Hall Room 136. Cookies and refreshments will be served. A pet food and supply drive in Cedar’s honor will benefit local shelters. NEW! VR experiment: Recruiting participants for virtual reality (VR) experiment. Psychology researchers are seeking participants who are at least 18 years old, speak fluent English and have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (no glasses) for VR research aiming to explore how to improve human interactions with automated vehicles. Volunteers needed on OSU sculpture: Volunteers are needed beginning Oct. 8 to assist the John Grade Studio team in assembling four thousand clusters of spine-like “cones” that will swarm together to define the shape of the new sculpture, Emeritus, on OSU’s main campus. Free COVID tests: Free iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests are available on the Corvallis and Bend campuses and at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Each box contains two tests. While supplies last, OSU community members can pick up these self-test kits without restrictions. Please note the FDA has extended the self-test kit expiration dates by six months.
