Climate change is altering familiar conditions of the world's oceans and creating new environments that could undermine efforts to protect sea life in the world's largest marine protected areas, new research from Oregon State University shows.
The research project by Oregon State University is among 15 projects that just won $2 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of its annual specialty block grants. Oregon is a big producer of specialty crops, which include fruit, vegetables, tree nuts, Christmas trees and nursery crops.

In honor of Veterans Day this week, the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State has compiled a series of profiles of current and former members of the U.S. military — students, faculty, staff, alumni, and many others.
"We avoid the burning of over 100,000 acres of wheat straw fields by farmers," said Dr. Phil Harding, vice president of applications for Columbia Pulp. He spent 12 years as a professor of chemical engineering at Oregon State University. "The carbon footprint of our process is approximately half that of conventional fiber making processes," Harding explained.
Oregon State University faculty serving in the OSU Extension Service’s Family and Community Health (FCH) program in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences have a lot to be proud of this month. Out of 632 awards applications from 38 states, they took home three national first-place awards and several top recognitions from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS), a professional organization for Extension FCH faculty and staff.
