The $3,600 in scholarships Callaway has won through the Miss America Organization enabled her to return to college, this time online with Oregon State University for a bachelor’s degree in public health while living in Atlanta and working as a nanny. Callaway wants to return to UGA for a master’s degree, work in a rape crisis center and research what she calls the epidemiology of sexual violence.
A six-month study of healthy older men by Oregon State University’s (OSU) Tory Hagen and Alexander Michels demonstrated that daily multivitamin/multimineral supplementation had a positive effect on key nutrition biomarkers.
The team carried out the work at Oregon State University, which runs a 104-meter-long flume—the largest experimental wave laboratory in the country. They trucked in 500 cubic meters of sand and spent weeks with a bulldozer and backhoe sculpting a beach and dune to look like shores along the northeastern United States. Then they transplanted bitter panicgrass (Panicum amarum), a common dune plant, and let it grow and establish roots inside the flume for 6 months.
The Ontong Java Plateau, a volcanically-formed underwater plateau located in the Pacific Ocean north of the Solomon Islands, is younger and its eruption was more protracted than previously thought, new research led by Oregon State University suggests.
Tiger shark: Jason Kovich, analyst/programmer with Academic Technologies, says, “This is a photo of tiger sharks from my recent SCUBA diving trip to Beqa Lagoon in Fiji at the end of May. On this dive, there were 10 tiger sharks along with bull, lemon and nurse sharks. Research Advancement Academy: Interested in applying to the Research Advancement Academy (RAA) for Academic Year 2023-24? Join us at noon June 16 for a Zoom info session (register here). The Academy is for early- and mid-career from across OSU who already have successful research portfolios and interdisciplinary experience (see eligibility). The Academy goal is to support a cohort of Fellows to develop leadership skills, apply for seed funds, and within two years successfully lead large (>$3Mil) transdisciplinary proposals & funded research programs.
Gearing Up for Pollinator Week: The Oregon State University Extension Service in Lane County welcomes the public to Gearing Up for Pollinator Week on June 17. The classes and activities will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at 996 Jefferson St. at the OSU Extension Service office in Eugene. Gearing Up for Pollinator Week will feature classes and activities led by OSU Master Gardeners and a guest lecturer from the Xerces Society. NEW! Commencement: Oregon State University will graduate 7,338 students during its university-wide commencement ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, at Reser Stadium on the Corvallis campus. More than 3,700 students are expected to participate in the ceremony that will honor the university’s 154th class. The event is free to attend, open to the public and held rain or shine. Gates will open at 9 a.m. and tickets are not required. The ceremony will be livestreamed in English and Spanish. Oregon State University – Cascades will graduate 303 students during its commencement ceremony at 10 a.m., Sunday, June 18 on the oval green.
Jim Ervin retirement party: Join us in celebration of Jim Ervin’s career as greenhouse manager for the College of Agricultural Sciences. Ervin has served the college for 39 years. NWREC open house: The North Willamette Research & Extension Center (NWREC) in Aurora Oregon is hosting a community open house 4-7 p.m., July 19. The public is invited for an up-close look at research and development at the center including berry-tasting, hay ride farm tours, farm equipment display and fresh farm veggies. Student Health Services is moving: The Plageman Student Health Center is permanently closing at 1 p.m. on June 16, and all Student Health Services locations will be closed from June 19-23. Survivor advocacy services will be available during this closure. OSU Student Health will move to three new locations this summer, including the new Health Center next to Reser Stadium. The Great Move-Out is Here: On and off-campus students can donate food, linens, clothes, furniture and more to local non-profits through the Great Move-Out Donation Drive. On-campus students can donate in res hall lobbies from May 30-June 20. Off-campus students can donate at the Benton County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. -3 p.m., June 17-18. Grads Give Back Gown Share: Grads Give Back is OSU’s Gown Share Program. This year, we have been able to supply gowns to over 30 grads from undergrad to Ph.D. Please consider donating your gown at the MU year-round in person or by mail; at the Valley Library quad entrance June 17-18; or outside of Reser Stadium after commencement. NEW! Student Legacy Park: Student Legacy Park, including all fields, tennis facilities, basketball court and sand volleyball courts will be closed for resurfacing and turf replacement starting on Monday, June 19 and continuing through the summer. The sidewalk on the north side of Washington Way directly adjacent to Student Legacy Park will also be closed. Other possible impacts include noise, dust and mud near the construction site.
Multi-use path: The Campus Way multi-use path will be closed daily from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., to all vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic from June 19-30 for brush clearing and spraying. Work will occur Monday through Friday. The route will reopen after 3 p.m. on weekdays and remain fully open on weekends. The closure will begin just west of the Feed Center and continue down Campus Way to 53rd Street.
