While understanding of rogue waves remains elusive, scientists may be gaining greater insights into how sneaker waves form. Last year, researchers at Oregon State University published a study finding sneakers that strike the Pacific Northwest coast are generated by far-off storms and conditions just right closer to the coastline.
The Oregon Department of Education has awarded a grant to an OSU-Cascades professor. It's part of a statewide plan to expand and offer computer science classes to all students K-12 by 2028. (see also Central Oregon Daily)
Reports of worrisome symptoms prompted OSU to conduct a test last year that has verified the strain affects otherwise resistant hazelnut cultivars, said Nik Wiman, an OSU Extension horticulture specialist.
“It’s almost impossible to describe how awe-inspiring this will be for years and years to come,” said Lisa Ballance, director of Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute. “It’ll be an incredible sight.”

Advances in Battery Research 2024: The College of Science’s David Ji, who researches sustainable battery technologies, will present Feb. 21 at the online symposium Advances in Battery Research 2024 organized by Technology Networks. Ji’s presentation is titled “Opportunities and challenges of aqueous metal batteries” and will encompass the large picture of energy storage, the requirements of storage batteries and results from the Ji lab regarding fundamental solutions in enabling aqueous metal batteries for storage purposes. NEW! Male study participants needed: Researchers in the College of Health at OSU are studying the effects of an FDA-approved drug on people at risk for high blood sugar. We are looking for male study participants between the age of 18-59, who are non-smokers and do not have diabetes. The study involves several visits to the Samaritan Athletic Medicine Center in Corvallis over approximately four months. Student Veteran of the Year: Angelina Trillo, a senior in political science at Oregon State University from Portland, has been named 2023 Student Veteran of the Year by the Student Veterans of America. The announcement was made Jan. 16. As president of OSU’s Student Veterans Association and an Army Reserve medic for her unit, she has been praised by supervisors as vital to the university’s veteran affairs operations and is a key member of staff. Research Fellowship Program: The Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (NW CASC) Fellowship Program is now accepting proposals from graduate students and post docs for our 2024-2025 Research Fellowship Program, which supports research related to climate adaptation for Northwest natural and cultural resource management and provides training in developing decision-relevant science. The NW CASC Fellowship Program funding will be available as early as fall term 2024 to support research performed during the 2024-2025 academic year. The deadline to submit proposals is March 11.
