OSU study: Veterans' PTSD affected by factors like service appraisal, social support (The Skanner)

Military veterans’ individual perceptions of their combat experiences and the social supports they receive when they return home are greater predictors of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms than the specific conflict in which they served, a new Oregon State University study found.
 

New online guides help identify Oregon's many native bees (Jefferson Public Radio)

The work of identifying a bee can be painstaking, so you can imagine the work that went into the identification keys. Jim Rivers, Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology at the Oregon State University College of Forestry, and Josh Dunlap at the Oregon Department of Agriculture are among the people who did the work; they share details in a visit with the JX.

Board of Trustees: The Oregon State University Board of Trustees will meet Jan. 19 to consider election of board officers, a presidential compensation adjustment and a debt resolution of long-term refinancing. The board will meet from 9:15 a.m.-1:35 p.m. Jan. 19 in the Horizon Room of the Memorial Union on the Corvallis campus. All board meetings are open to the public and can be attended in person, on Zoom or on the phone by calling 1-888-475-4499 (meeting ID: 655 466 888). Meeting agendas and materials are posted as they become available on the board’s website.

NEW! Geoscience sale: The Geoscience Club will be selling baked goods, planter boxes and rock samples in the MU Quad from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Jan. 19. All funds support our student members by reducing their cost to attend our academic trip to the Eastern Sierras this spring break.

Commodities, Cafes and Climate Change — France: Join OSU faculty members James Sterns and Dominique Bachelet from the College of Agricultural Sciences for a four-credit, two-week program in France from June 18-July 2. FYI Friday – Behind-the-scenes of Student Care Team: Have you ever made a referral to Student Care and weren’t quite sure what happens next? Student Care is designed to help students problem solve within the university community, and access referrals for personal matters or emergencies. In this session, we'll go behind the scenes of what referrals and students can expect when working with our office. NEW! Say Hey: Say Hey will be hosted at OSU from 5:30-8 p.m., Feb. 27, by the Portland Partners in Diversity. The goal is to help connect local businesses and community members with professionals of color. Employees of color are honored at the event and encouraged to register as honorees. Community members and allies are encouraged to attend also to support building community and connections. BABy@OSU: The week of Jan. 22, join us for the first BABy@OSU baby shower week. New Trauma-Informed Yoga class from CAPE: Beginning Jan. 22, CAPE Survivor Advocacy will be hosting a trauma-informed yoga class for survivors of gender-based violence. This class is led at a gentle to medium pace. All bodies and levels of movement are welcome and modifications will be offered. Limited yoga mats are available – please bring your own mat if possible. CTL QT Talk — Creating an Inclusive Classroom: Difference, Power and Oppression Model. In this talk, attendees will learn about the inclusive teaching framework used by the Difference, Power and Oppression (DPO) Program. The DPO Program works with faculty across all fields and disciplines at OSU to develop inclusive curricula that addresses institutionalized systems of power, privilege and inequity in the U.S. The session will focus on providing practical reflection questions and tips for implementing the DPO framework in your own teaching practice. Core Curriculum for OSU Managers and Supervisors: The Core Curriculum for Managers and Supervisors is a training program for all Oregon State managers, supervisors and lead workers. Nominations open for OSU Safety Award: Environmental Health & Safety is accepting nominations for the OSU Safety Award, a peer recognition program that recognizes outstanding efforts to encourage and help improve safety at OSU. Nominees must be student employees, staff or faculty members. Employees from all units are eligible, as long as they are not working in a position where safety is one of their primary responsibilities. The program includes an individual award and a team award. Adulting 101 Offered through OSU Extension 4H: Join Lane County 4-H for the Adulting 101 series. This five-week course is designed for all teens ages 12-18 in Lane County. Classes include career readiness, budgeting basics, self-defense, emergency preparedness, CPR and first aid certification, food preservation basics, mental health and wellness care, cooking basics and car basics. Adulting 101 is designed to provide teens skills and confidence for entering post-high school life. The series is $75 for community members, and those enrolled in a 4-H club will receive a $25 discount.
